How to Make a Halloween Cat with Moving Eyes and Tongue

This is a cool moving-eye and tongue Halloween cat project anybody can make from materials they have lying around the house.

What You Will Need:

Two pieces of blank paper (drawing, typewriter or printer paper)
Number 2 pencil
Scissors
Colored pencils

Using your number 2 pencil, lightly draw a basic circle shape on one piece of paper. Make sure your line is light enough so that it can be easily erased if you make a mistake. Place some pointy ears at the top of the circle, draw almond-shaped eyes, an upside-down triangle for the nose, and a right-side up triangle for the mouth. Draw some whiskers on both sides of the cheeks of your Halloween cat, starting right between the nose and mouth. Refine your cat's face until it looks the way you want it to.

Go back over your Halloween cat design with the number 2 pencil, bearing down harder this time so you get a heavier line.

Draw a line directly above the eyes, in the center of the forehead. Make sure this line is also thick and heavy.

On the other piece of paper, draw some round eyes for your Halloween cat, making sure that the round eyes align with the almond-shaped eyes of your cat face. You can check this by placing the second sheet of paper directly on top of the first sheet, so that the almond shape shows through the second sheet. You can also lift your second sheet to be sure you've got the right placement.

Draw a "tab" so that it aligns with the line above the Halloween cat's eyes. Draw the tongue so that it descends below the cat's mouth. Then draw another circle shape on your second sheet of paper so that it connects the tab with the tongue. Check the diagram included with this article to see how this should look.

Cut out the almond eyes, the triangle mouth, and cut the line above the cat's eyes, creating a slit. You can do this by folding the paper over, and cutting right across. Leave this cut straight for the slit. For the eyes and mouth, use the slit as a starting point to cut out the eye and mouth shapes.

Cut out the second piece of paper, around the tab, circle shape, and tongue.

Color the Halloween cat's face black. Color the eyes yellow. Create a thin black slit down the yellow eyes, and draw a black border around the eyes. Then color the tongue pink. Color the upper tab black so it matches the cat's face.

Then put the tab in the slit, and the tongue in the mouth. Make sure the eyes align with the eye holes of the cat shape.

Then move the tab slightly, and the Halloween cat's eyes and tongue will appear to move.

I did all the drawing and cutting for this Halloween cat project, and allowed my seven-year-old son to do the coloring. Don't be too much of a stickler about staying within the lines. Allow your child to use his instincts for coloring this project.
