How to Make a Halloween Monster Dummy

Claire Luna-Pinsker
Gather together some old clothing; preferably pants, long sleeved button shirt with collars or sweatshirts with collars, and socks and gloves. The more worn in appearance the better. Flannel shirts are better to use. Have a large supply of safety pins available. Have several full Halloween masks on hand, the ones that cover the head completely with black netting going down the neckline. Have a large stack of newspaper ready to roll and crumble.

Crumble newspaper into tight balls and shove into socks and gloves until you fill them out.

Crumble newspaper into tight balls and fill out the masks. Blacken open eyes with permanent marker if needed. Set aside.

Attach a pair of socks to the bottom of the pant's legs by securing them on with safety pins. Stick the top of the socks inside the pants legs and attach.

Now open sheets of newspaper fully, using approximately ten sheets at a time. Roll into long logs and place into pant's legs. Use three logs per leg. In the seat of the pants lay three more logs of newspaper horizontally. The newspaper will look like bones in the legs and fill out the seat of the pants.

Tuck the shirt into the waistline of the pants and attach with safety pins. Now button shirt three quarters of the way up.

Attach the stuffed gloves to the ends of the sleeves, tucking the edge into the sleeve and attaching with safety pins.

Now make newspaper logs and place two logs into each sleeve. Take four more logs and place across chest vertically into edge of pants. Take two more logs and place across chest horizontally to give bulk. Take two more logs and insert into sleeves and overlap across shoulders to give image of muscles. Now button shirt most of the way up.

Now take mask and place bottom edge into collar of shirt. Attach with safety pins securely. Button shirt fully up

Your dummy should look life size in appearance. If needed crumble newspaper up and fill in between log rolls. If desired you can sew dummy clothing together instead of using safety pins. I think using safety pins is easier and less time consuming.

Carry dummy outside and place in a chair or in position on the ground. Complete look using grave stones, spider web or other Halloween accessories if desired.
