How to Handle a Business Partner's Overspending

Separating business funds from personal funds is important if you want your business to survive. Constantly intermingling money can land you in major trouble eventually. Not only will your business start to suffer, but your personal finances will do the same. Trying to juggle finances between the two accounts can place a lot of stress on a business owner. It is always a good idea to establish two separate accounts, so that you will not be tempted. If you have a business partner, then you must monitor their spending habits as well. Unauthorized personal use of business accounts should not be taken lightly. At the beginning stages of your partnership, ground rules should already be in place.

Confrontation is a must- Don't fool yourself into thinking that the spending situation will go away quietly. Before you know it, your business partner will go through company funds in a short amount of time. You must stand firm and confront them about the overspending of the business budget. When doing so, remember to remain calm and firm. Although you would like to place trust in your business partner when it comes to business finances, they apparently cannot handle the responsibility.

Go your separate ways- If your business partner consistently disobeys the established rules regarding the business finances, then consider separating from them. It is not a good idea to continue working with someone you do not trust. Choosing to enter a partnership with an individual means that you have something in common with them and you trust them. Misappropriation of business finances is unforgivable in the business world. If you cannot depend on your business partner to make sound decisions when it comes to company profits, then it's best to go your own separate way.

Seek legal action- As a last option, you may want to consider legal action against your business partner. If your business is going through bankruptcy because of your partners financial irresponsibility, then take it to court. Present evidence in court will almost guarantee that your company funds be repaid by the unwise spender. Deciding to take a business partner to court because of a financial situation should not be taken lightly. It could soon become costly because of skyrocketing legal fees and time away from work. Legal action should be your last option for getting your money back.

One of the best ways to prevent your business partner from overspending company funds is to monitor them. Having unlimited and regular access to purchases made with business credit cards, checking accounts, and other financial accounts is a must. Instead of finding out at the last minute that your company finances are in jeopardy, keep a watchful eye on everything.
