How to Handle Children Who Fail Classes

Many parents instill in their children the importance of making good grades and bringing home an excellent report card. When these children bring home a less than perfect report card they are shunned and get their privileges taken away from them as a form of punishment. Parents who take concern in their children's failing grades should applaud themselves for being involved, but punishment for bad grades may not be the best way to react to children that bring home poor report records.

Parents that are fixated on their children receiving decent grades often react blindly to poor report cards. These parents automatically think that their kid has goofed off in school, while this may be true for some students it is the complete opposite for others. A good percentage of students that receive poor grades do so because they have difficulty learning the subject and parents take little to no initiative in helping their children with the subject. Many parents rely solely on the teacher to teach the child everything he needs to know about the subject. When the children get home they have no one to help them with their homework and no one to talk to about the homework. Teens also have to deal with feeling inferior to their peers who may fair much better in the subject which greatly affects their self esteem. These students might also rebel in school and out of school. They also gain negative feelings about school because they do not have the material or resources at home to help them.

Some children intentionally goof off in school and they are the ones that should be stripped of their privileges. The children that just can not seem to get it should not be punished but instead they should be confronted. Parents should avoid getting overly upset when their children bring home poor grades. They should instead sit down with their children and talk to them to see what problems they might be having. There are many alternatives for children who struggle with school assignments. Parents and their children should sit down together to review these alternatives and come up with a comfortable solution. The following are ways parents can help their children earn better grades in the subjects that they experience the most difficulty in.

1. In- school tutoring is an option for children who struggle with their work. Many public schools offer free tutoring services to students who experience difficulty with their assignments. Children can meet with their tutor for a few hours every day after school.

2. Out of school tutoring is another option for children who struggle with their school work. Parents can hire a tutor to come into the home and work with their children. Children might feel more comfortable taking the tutoring sessions inside of their home.

3. Home schooling is an option for parents whose work schedule can accommodate it. Some children have a hard time learning in the traditional school setting. Attending school can be very difficult for young children as they have to face the social pressures of the school environment. These pressures can cause the children to become very anxious. Home schooling is ideal for these children. Parents may want to suggest home schooling if their children have a hard time doing well in school. Parents usually suffice as the teachers in the home school setting but teachers (or those with similar experience) can be hired to teach the child in the home for the parent.

4. Children who express extreme difficulty with their school assignments can be placed into special education programs in their school. Special education classes allow children to work at a slower pace and are targeted to children with special needs and learning disabilities. Special education teachers can work individually with each student to tailor lesson plans to their individual needs. This type of education allows students to excel in a comfortable way. Parents should know that special education students are often made fun of in school by other students. Other students in the school call children in the special education classes '˜speds." Your child might refuse to enter into these classes for fear of being called and thought of as such.

5. Some schools may offer online schooling and extra help for students that need more practice. Not every school offers online schooling so parents should talk to the headmaster and teachers to see what options are available.

6. Parents can frequent the library a few times a week with their children to take out books and DVDs that focus on the subject the child is struggling with.

Lastly, children have the ability to exceed in school but many of them are often weighed down by personal problems and social pressures. These pressures make it almost impossible for them to focus in school. Children that face much adversity should receive some form of counseling so that they can alleviate their stress and become better students. Parents need to pay close attention to their children to see whether they are suffering from any pressures. One on one time is also important for children. Children need to feel loved, important, and supported. Parents should take out at least one day each week to spend with their children.
