How to Handle Long Airport Layovers

Having a long layover at the airport can be extremely frustrating. Whether it is because the flight schedules just didn't match up very well, or whether it is because a plane has been delayed due to weather or some other unforeseen circumstance a layover can be some of the slowest passing time in your life if you are not prepared.

Here are some things you can do in order to prepare to handle long airport layovers:

Bring some entertainment along with you when you leave for your flight. In this day and age there are so many different electronic devices that you can bring with you that you can use to keep yourself entertained during a layover or even during a long flight. For example, you might bring a portable DVD player and a selection of DVD movies to watch. You might bring your laptop computer. Many airports even have wireless internet connections as well as a place for you to plug in your laptop. You could bring handheld games to play to pass the time. Even an MP3 player with some audio books loaded can help you handle long airport layovers without too much frustration.

Bring along a book to read or a puzzle book to work on while you are waiting. These activities are old standbys when it comes to passing time.

Make sure you dress comfortably. When you are traveling if you are in a suit or a dress you are going to be uncomfortable, in general. Don't take the risk that you'll get a stuck on a layover wearing uncomfortable clothes. If you need to dress professionally on your flight, try to pack your professional clothing separate and change into them, perhaps on arrival. Alternatively, you can pack comfortable clothing in your carry on, in case you stuck on an unexpected layover and need to change out of your business attire.

Investigate the airports amenities. Modern airports have all sorts of things to do and see. From restaurants to hotels to newsstands and stores there is often quite a bit to do. Many airports today resemble shopping malls in terms of the sheer amount of retail stores they have available in them.

Finally, just try to be patient. Keep in mind that it isn't the fault of the airline attendant that your flight has been delayed or that you have a long layover. When you interact with the airline personnel try to do so in a way such that they will want to help you out, rather than be annoyed or angry at your complaints.
