How to Handle a Teenager Caught Shoplifting

Teenagers May Become Involved in Petty Crime at a Young Age

Debbie Roome
Teenage years are notoriously difficult but it still comes as a shock to find out that a child is in trouble with the police. Shoplifting is common among teenagers and there are things parents can do to try and get their child to reform his or her ways.

Teenagers and Shoplifting

Shoplifters are male and female and come from all races and backgrounds. In the UK it is estimated that 25% of all people caught shoplifting are between the ages of 3 and 17. Teenagers have poor impulse control and often act without thinking an action through.

Why do Teenagers Shoplift

There are a number of reasons why teens shoplift. In some cases the motivation may be a combination of factors. Here are the main reasons why teens steal:

• Some take items from a store to experience the rush that comes from doing something illegal. This may be fuelled by admiration from friends. In some cases, they don't even want or need the article they steal.

• In other cases, the teen shoplifts items that they want but cannot afford or are not allowed to buy. These often include things such as clothing, makeup, DVDs, cigarettes and perfume.

• If a teen has a problem with alcohol or drugs, they may shoplift and sell the items to fund their habit.

• They reason that the stores can afford it.

Signs that a Teen is Shoplifting

The main sign that a teen is shoplifting is the sudden acquisition of new clothing, jewelry and other items that they normally could not afford. They may be reluctant to explain where these items came from or may blatantly lie about them. Parents should make every effort to uncover the truth, even if they have to inspect the child's room while they are at school. Look for security tags, clothing tags and items hidden under beds or in the back of cupboards.

Handling a Teen that is Caught Shoplifting

Whether a parent or a store catches a teen, the problem needs to be addressed. In some cases a store will let a first time thief off with a warning and banish them from the premises. Others will always call the police. Parents should escort the teen back to the store and stay with them while they return the stolen items and apologize. The shame is often enough to deter them from stealing in the future. If not, parents may need to call in a youth worker or someone to help them with their child. Supervision and alternative after school activities can help turn a youth away from illegal pastimes.

If a teenager is caught shoplifting, parents have every right to be angry but must ensure that their love for their child is conveyed at the same time. Supporting them through police hearings is extremely important and the teen is more likely to turn their back on crime if they are assured of their parents love and support.
