How to Hang a Picture on Metal Studs

Hanging a shelf, mirror, or picture on a metal stud requires a bit of advanced planning. The studs are often more difficult to find and not all fasteners are appropriate. However, taking the time to carefully hang the item from the metal stud will ensure it doesn't damage the wall or unexpectedly fall off the wall one day.

While you can sometimes avoid using the metal studs when installing very light pictures, shelves and heavy mirrors require studs in order to safely install them. Be sure when picking a shelving system that the supports will match the location of your studs. Most metal studs are spaced 16 inches on center, although rooms with high ceilings may find that they are spaced closer together.

Step 1: Look for a metal stud near the area you wish to hang your picture. The easiest way to find a metal stud is with a stud finder. If you do not have a stud finder, you can tap against the wall, carefully listening for a change in sound that indicates the presence of a metal stud.

TIP: Sometimes imperfections in the walls can also tip you off when you're looking for a stud.

Step 2: Mark the location of the necessary hole or holes so they are directly over a metal stud. If you need two or more holes, be sure to use a carpenter's level to make sure that the holes are completely level, to ensure that your picture will be the same.

TIP: If the picture is light and too narrow to span the distance between two studs, screw into one metal stud and use a drywall anchor and screw to provide the second peg to hang your picture.

Step 3: Drill a pilot hole through the wall and into the stud beneath. Go slow and don't try to force the bit. Instead, let the drill do the work for you.

Step 4: Screw a screw with small, narrow threads into place through the wall and into the underlying metal stud. Continue drilling holes and installing screws until you have enough screws in the wall to support your picture.

Step 5: Hang the picture on the screws protruding from the wall.
