How to Be Happy with Your Career, Even in the Worst of Circumstances

Arthur Kirk
This is the time of year when many new graduates enter the work force. Some might be looking for their first permanent job, and others looking for a summer job before going to college. While at work you will be exposed to many different situations, some will be positive and others will be negative. No job is always perfect. If you manage to maintain a positive attitude and a happy disposition during the work day your job will be much more enjoyable. Unfortunately that isn't always easy Here are some tips for how to keep a positive attitude while in the office.

1. Choose To Be Happy

How do you arrive at work in the morning? Are you dreading the assignments awaiting you? If so you are destined to have a rough day at work. Instead show up for work in a positive mood looking forward to the challenges that await you. One way to help ensure this is to get a good night's sleep the night before. Nobody can maintain a good mood all work day, eventually that lack of sleep will catch up to you. Keep in mind that work is just part of your life, try to anticipate something positive that will occur when you leave the office that day if you are struggling to keep a positive attitude. The better your attitude, the easier it will be to interact with even the most difficult coworkers in your office.

2. Find a Compatible Job And Make It Interesting

This tip can be applied even before you accept a job. Interview the interviewer to make sure the position is something that will interest you. If you have phone work, then don't take a job that involves being on the phone a lot. Along the same line of thought, if you love interacting with people don't take a job that isolates you working with limited interpersonal interaction. Once you accept the position find something you really love to do in your job. Use that to motivate you through the less interesting parts of your job, believe me there are some in every job. If you have that carrot on a stick to get you through the less interesting parts of your day they will go faster. Finally, don't get bogged down in one task if it's one that has a low interest level to you. Split that task up during the day around tasks you enjoy if your schedule allows it.

3. Avoid Unpleasant Influences And Limit The Stress Level You Expose Yourself To

In every job who you work with can effect your performance. Everyone knows there is at least one person in their office who is always looking to stir up a controversy or bring a coworker down to match their dissatisfaction level with the job. Try to limit your interaction with this person. This is not only because they can influence your view of the job in a negative way, but also because associating with that person may give management a bad impression of you. They may think you agree with that person's views. Are there certain tasks in your job that are extremely stressful? Try to split them up so you are doing them all back to back. Do one in the morning and one after lunch. Remember, just as you leave the stress of work at work, make sure you leave your stress from home or your social life at the door before entering the office. This will help reduce your stress level.

In the end, nobody is going to love their job every minute of the day, every day of the week. Yet, if you follow the above tips it will be easier for you to get through the challenging times in your office. Keep in mind that not everyone in your office knows of these tips, so instead of reacting to their negativeness just be glad that you know how to negate it.

  • Being happy or angry is a choice, being happy can be harder but more rewarding.
  • Find a job that interests you, and find a task that can "pull you through" the challenging times.
  • Beware of the bitter coworkers in your office, they can effect your mood very easily.
Being happy at the office makes your day go by faster, being angry or upset will cause the day to drag.
