How to Get Health Insurance when You're Pregnant

Kristi Patrice Carter
You've realized that you're pregnant and you have absolutely no insurance. Births typically bring in hospital bills that can reach several thousand dollars easily. This is not a great time to not have insurance.
Prevention

If you're considering getting pregnant but you're not pregnant, you can prevent these problems from occurring. Get insurance first. This will help you save a lot of money and stress! You're not likely to get turned down because you're not even pregnant yet. Also check the policy to see if there's a delay before the coverage kicks in if you get pregnant soon after. However, if you wait until after you're already pregnant to try and find insurance, you're going to have a really rough time.

Exorbitant Prices

The truth is that if you're only looking for insurance because you're pregnant, you're most likely going to end up paying astronomical premiums for that insurance. Check around for companies that market specifically to pregnant women. It may be easier to get insurance for a cheaper fee from companies who market to only pregnant women. Otherwise, you may have to settle for paying these massive fees. Sometimes it's worth it, because the fees will end up being nowhere near the actual cost of the labor and delivery.
Low Income Mothers

Low-income mothers who cannot afford to get health insurance when they're pregnant can qualify for Medicaid. This is a government funded insurance program that helps low income individuals be able to visit the doctor. It allows pregnant women to receive the ultrasounds, checkups, medicines and other things they need while they're pregnant. For many women, this is the only insurance they can get, and it allows them to give birth to healthy children who have been taken care of during the pregnancy. In order to apply for Medicaid, you need to contact the Medicaid office closest to you and you can find it at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/home/medicaid.asp.

Work or Spouse

Try receiving health insurance through your work or your spouse, which may end up being cheaper than an independent insurance company you find and go through yourself. Read through the policies to determine whether the insurance will cover the pregnancy if it's pre-existing or not. Check with a representative to determine how much the premiums will be if the company will allow you to open an insurance account.

By using these tips above, individuals can determine how to get insurance when they're pregnant.
