How to Get Healthier by Starting a Walking Group

Joanne Eglash
Want to start off the New Year in a healthy way? Get motivated to walk regularly. Walking has been shown to offer one of the best ways to exercise: it's free, easy, and (as long as you walk in a safe area and get your doctor's okay before you start) one of the safest ways to get and stay fit.

The problem: it's not easy to get motivated, right? The solution: involve others! That way, when you're feeling like a slug, they can get you out and going.

Children today often stay inside, involved with playing computer games, chatting on their cell phones, or watching TV. Studies show that obesity among children is resulting in conditions that used to be adult-only, such as diabetes and hypertension, occurring among kids and teens. By encouraging your children to walk with you, you achieve two goals: you become closer to your children (it's often easier to chat while you walk, as exercise forms a bond), and your entire family becomes healthier. It's a win-win!

Having trouble persuading your children to go with you? Make it into a game: the winner of the best "find" on the walk (such as a pretty flower or an unusual rock) wins a non-food reward, such as the right to choose which movie the family attends on the weekend.

But suppose you have no friends or family members to walk with you? The answer: start a walking group! Post a note at a local YMCA, inviting others to walk with you. Try putting up a bulletin on an online local newsgroup or website.

Tip: If that doesn't work, don't forget the family dog. Dogs can make great walking buddies: they're always in the mood for an outing! If you have an older dog or a very young dog, it's wise to check with a vet about any precautions. Then slip on your tennis shoes, grab the dog's leash, and get ready for a nice jaunt with your best friend.
