How to Make Healthy Chips

One of America's Favorite Snacks Reinvented

Isn't it relaxing to curl up in front of your favorite movie with a bag of potato chips? There's just something satisfying about the salty taste and crisp texture. Of course, what isn't satisfying is the nutrition label. With one glance, you're ready to toss the bag in the trash. Too bad there aren't tasty chips available that are also healthy. At least there isn't any available at the store, but you can always make healthy chips at home.

When making healthy chips at home, you don't have to stick with the potato variety. You can actually get quite creative with your healthy chips. You can also choose the flavors you want. You can even make sweet chips, if you like. But, the most important thing to remember, no matter what type of healthy chips you make, is to bake them.

One variety of healthy chips people find very appealing is pita chips. Pita chips are not only healthy, but they are also easy to make. All you need to do is set your oven to 350 degrees and cut your favorite variety of pita bread into wedges. Brush the wedges with olive oil and add your favorite seasonings. For example, sea salt with fresh cracked pepper would be good. Or you could add garlic powder and rosemary. If you want sweet chips, you could brush the wedges lightly with butter and sprinkle on cinnamon sugar. Please do note that butter is in fact healthier than margarine. Margarine contains trans-fats, which are very bad for the heart. This doesn't mean that you should go overboard with the butter though. You still want your chips to be healthy after all. Once seasoned, spread the pita wedges out on a cookie sheet and bake until the chips are slightly brown and crispy.

Another ways to make healthy chips is to use tortillas. While everyone's enjoyed fried tortilla chips, many find that the baked variety to be just as good. Again, you will need to set your oven to 350 degrees. Lay several of your favorite tortillas out in a stack and cut into wedges. You can place them on the cookie sheet and bake right away, but there are healthy ways to season these chips. For example, you can dip them in a mixture of lime juice, salt, and chili powder. Or you can brush them with olive oil and sprinkle on a bit of cayenne pepper. After you've seasoned your healthy chips, place them on a cookie sheet and bake until slightly brown.

  • Bake instead of frying.
  • Use tortillas or pita bread.
  • Bake at 350 until slightly brown and crisp.
Baked chips can even be a good source of fiber if you use whole wheat tortillas and pita bread.
