How Helium Writers Can Avoid Burnout

David DeWitt
One of the ongoing challenges for writers at Helium is the issue of burnout. What is burnout? Burnout is simply the process of working to the point beyond mere mental or physical fatigue. Many times writers can overwork themselves trying to produce additional content for the Helium site and cause themselves to burnout on writing for a time. How can writers avoid the experience of burnout?

Know when to take a break

Creating content and writing is a passion for every member at helium but there are times when a break is needed. Every profession needs to have break times. Know when you need to step away from the computer and the creating process. The break does not have to be long, perhaps fifteen minutes to an hour. Stepping away from the writing can give a clearer and fresher perspective.

Diversify the workload

There are a number of different things that go into the writing of an article. Rarely do writers just sit down and crank out an article just to do it. Writing is nothing if not a process. There is a writing process that takes place, even for short articles. Define the process that works best for you personally and find the various parts that work together for the best possible chance of success.

Here is one possible list of parts to the writing process:

Create an idea log List various article ideas in one place for easy reference

Start a writing notebook Begin with a simple notebook and write a title at the top of each page. Take the notebook with you wherever you go and write a little on some topic each day. Before long the notebook will be full and the beginnings of many articles will be at your fingertips.

Type and rewrite article notes Use the notes as a base for the final draft of the article but be ready and willing to change anything that does not work.

Change the routine

Sometimes burnout can be avoided just by changing the basic routine and allowing for some different activities to be added or subtracted from the schedule. Remember, there is life outside of Helium and writers are meant to experience life to become better writers. Take some time to take a short trip or half a day to do something new and different. A change of routine can bring much needed refreshment and rest to the mind, body and soul.

Write something different

Another way to bring about some simple change is to tackle a different kind of writing. Find a sub-channel that you have never published in before and find a title that interests you and start writing. Making the effort to do something different can take a writer out of their comfort zone and provide needed inspiration for existing projects.

Writing can be an exhausting and frustrating experience but it does not have to be. If you are experiencing burnout, do something about it. Make some needed changes and take control. Remember change the routine, write something different and take a break when needed. Burnout can hurt but avoiding it can be easier than you might think.
