Tip 1: Play some soft music in the nursery. Many babies adore being sung to, and music playing softly will accomplish the same thing. You can also play tapes or CDs that have repetitive poems or stories. Of course if you like you can also sing or read to your baby too.
Tip 2: Babies feel very secure when they are being rocked or walked around a room. You could try these first and if they do not seem to help, consider taking your baby for a quick walk in the stroller, or a quick ride in the car. Babies often fall asleep when being taken for a walk or for a ride in the car. Doing one of these is sure to encourage your baby to go to sleep, and then you can just take them to their crib and put them to bed. Just do your best not to wake them up when you do so!
Tip 3: Another idea that comes from the idea of rocking a baby is to purchase a rocking crib. The only thing with these is that they need to have a mechanism so that you can control the rocking motion, so the crib doesn't rock except when you want it to. Otherwise when it comes time to put your child in a regular bed, they may have trouble adjusting since a regular bed doesn't rock.
Tip 4: Be as calm as possible when it's time to put your baby to bed. If you are anxious around bedtime, your baby will pick up on this and associate bedtime with something scary or unpleasant. Sometimes this is hard to do because you want your baby to fall asleep so that you can get some much needed rest, however babies are very good at sensing the emotions of the adults around them and if you are anxious this will communicate itself to your baby.
Tip 5: You may find that your current sleep routine for your baby just is not working no matter if you apply the previous tips or not. In this case try to change your baby's sleep routine. It could be that your baby has a very different sleeping rhythm than you do. Try putting your baby to bed at different times, take your baby for walks during the daylight hours, maybe both of could put your baby to bed, and or try feeding your baby at different times. Basically alter your routines and lifestyle until you find the one that works best for getting your baby to sleep, and hence getting you some sleep as well.
Tip 6: If you've tried all these tips and nothing seems to be working, there may be a more serious underlying problem. If nothing is working then you should take your baby to the doctor and discuss the problem with him or her. This way if there is a medical problem as to why your baby is not able to get to sleep, your doctor can go about finding out what it is so it can be corrected.
Some babies have a more difficult time than others getting to sleep at night, but as you can see there are number of things you can try before assuming it might be a medical problem. Vigilance is the key to helping your baby find the easiest way to get to sleep.
