The Process of getting Help for Bipolar Disorder and Bipolar Depression

When you finally realize you may have bipolar disorder or bipolar depression and you know it is time to get the help you need, don't be afraid. It can make you feel uncomfortable at first because you will be asked questions about your life, what you do daily, and how your moods change. If you go to a mental health clinic you will first speak to a person who will get all of your information about your symptoms. This person will then match you up with a doctor and a therapist. It is important to see both a doctor and a therapist to get the full treatment you will need for bipolar disorder or bipolar depression.

When you are assigned a psychiatrist, he or she will ask you different questions so they will be able to give you the right diagnosis. They will then ask you what other medications you are on from any other doctor you see so they will know what kind of medication to start you out on. Different medications counteract with each other and can be dangerous if taken together. Your psychiatrist will then start you out on a medication or medications and whatever dosage they think is right for you. You will then have to wait for the medication to start to take effect. Your doctor will ask you to come back in two weeks to a month to see if the medication is working for you. If it is not and you are experiencing side effects, your doctor may adjust the dose or try you on a different medication. It is important to let the doctor know as soon as possible if you are experiencing any severe side effects.

Usually after seeing a psychiatrist you will then be assigned a therapist. The therapist will work with you on different techniques to try to keep your mood swings under control. He or she will also let you talk with them about how you are feeling and get a lot of things off of your chest. This is why it is important to see both a psychiatrist and a therapist.

This has been my experience while getting help for bipolar disorder and bipolar depression. It can be a while before you start to feel better depending on the medication but in the long run your symptoms of bipolar disorder and bipolar depression will ease up and you will start to be able to live a normal life.
