How to Help a Child with Asthma

Most children with asthma are very sensitive to the allergens such as dust mites, animal dander, mold spores, pollen, ragweed and trees. There are some useful tips to help you defend your home from allergens and take good care of your children with asthma.

Tip No.1 Keep the pets out of your child's bedroom.

If you have a kid suffering asthma symptom constantly, it's recommended not to keep any hairy pet such as: cat, rabbit and dog, etc. If your kid insist having a hairy pet, you should take time to explain patiently to him or her about how much harm this decision may bring to his or her health. No matter which decision your family makes finally, you should at least make a rule of keeping the pets out of your child's bedroom.

Tip No.2 Have your child change clothes as soon as he or she comes in from school or the outdoors.

This is the most effective way to keep outdoor allergens out of your house.

Tip No. 3 Keep bathrooms and other damp areas clean and dry.

When your living environment is clean and dry, the bacteria and allergens get less opportunity to grow or develop.

Tip No.4 Wash bedding and stuffed animals often in hot water.

Hot water is best agent for killing and removing the bacteria and allergens stained on the cloth. Furthermore, some chemical detergent products can also be allergen to your child with asthma. Therefore, when you wash the stuff of your kid, you should not overload the detergent. In fact, using hot water is a better way to kill and remove the bacteria and allergens.

Tip No.5 Clean your house or apartment frequently, and use a vacuum with a fine filter.

This is the most effective way to remove the dust mites, animal dander, mold spores and pollen out of your house and apartment.

Tip No.6 Encourage your child to do more sports activities.

Physical exercises can effectively improve your child's immune system and physical capacity in order to fight the allergens, bacteria, virus and diseases. However, your child should avoid taking cold drinks as soon as finishing the exercises, which may cause bronchial contraction. Instead, you can provide your child a bottle of warm water and the water temperature should be close to his or her body temperature.

Tip No.7 Seeing the following symptoms, you should send your child to hospital as soon as possible!

When the frequency and intensity of cough of your child increases; your child has wheezy breathing; the ease after two or three days of taking medicine; when the child suffers from vomiting caused by coughing.

Tip No.8 Alternative therapies can be effective in treating asthma.
Nowadays, acupuncture and homeopathy are among the most popular supplementary therapies for curing asthma. They particularly help strengthen the immune system, thereby reducing the incidence of diseases that can cause asthma. These therapies can be supplemental to medication.

Tip No.9 When the bronchial system of your child matures, his or her symptoms of asthma may disappear.
Most children with asthma will see their symptoms disappear before 18 years old. However, your child should avoid using a bronchodilator chronically, which may damage the bronchial wall permanently. Some doctors recommend the young child to use the bronchodilator to relieve difficult breathing quickly and effectively. But once the child relies on this medicine too much, he or she may never be able to live without a bronchodilator due to the permanent damage done on bronchial wall.
