How to Help Your Female Dog Through Labor and Birth

How to Help Deliver Puppies

Sincerity Anna
When your pregnant dog begins to look pregnant you can guess there's about four to six weeks left before she delivers. Dogs seem to go through pregnancy well. They keep their spirits high and remain quite active throughout it all. Towards the very end, a day or two before the actual delivery occurs you may notice a change in your girls mood. She may act uncomfortable and lick her rear a lot more often. She may be whiny and irritable. These are signs that your female dog is going into labor.

Labor hurts no matter what type of animal you are. When you suspect your girl is in labor make sure to calmly and soothingly talk to her. Assure her that it'll be okay. There's not much else that pet owners can do. Your female dog has a personality, and feelings. She may be a little scared as well as in a lot of pain. Dogs are so loving and loyal. Return that favor and give your girl some love and reassurance while she goes through labor and birth.

During labor is one thing, but when it's time to give birth you pretty much have to let her do it. The one thing you can do is to make sure that the pups are all okay. She will clean them and get them to breathe. If she does not then rub them lengthwise with a soft cloth repeatedly. Other wise, keep giving her words of love and affection like you would a woman. Also make sure that she does not roll on her pups while delivering more.

Once the pups are all born the mother dog will finish cleaning them up and then she will nurse them. She may be a little snippy with any other household pets and will be very protective of her pups. Respect this and do not get to close with the exception of a daily and routine check.

Pet owners love their pets like children. When your female dog gives birth you'll want to know what to do, and how to help. The best thing to do is to watch, and offer lots of love and praise. Dogs have feelings too. Your female dog will feel more relaxed and have an easier time giving birth if you are there for her, with her, encouraging her with words of love! Once the pups are born trust your girl to know what to do. However, make sure to check the puppies for growth and health at least once per day. Puppies who are failing to thrive need special attention and care! Thanks for reading and take care!

I am a registered dog breeder. Helping new creatures to come into this world is an amazing experience. I have assisted my girl dogs give birth in the past twenty years and every time is different, but the feeling of wonder I get is the same. Some girl dogs do it all themselves, some want almost to give birth on your lap! Just like people, dogs are all different.
