In response to this horrible tragedy, people worldwide have been donating time, money, and needed items to various organizations. Here are some ways that people can help those in Haiti. Keep in mind that when donating to any charity, do your own research to make sure that your money is going where you would like for it to go.
Phones for Haiti is an organization that will collect your unwanted cell phones to refurbish and resell. Some of the proceeds from donated phones will go to the American Red Cross. For more specific information about this program and to learn how to donate your old phones, please visit the website.
Monetary donations to the American Red Cross can be made through the organization's website by clicking here or by texting "Haiti" to "90999". Some of the participating carriers are Alltel, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile, AT&T, nTelos, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Cricket.
The William J. Clinton Foundation has set up a "Haiti Relief Fund" through which donations can be made online here or by texting "HAITI" to "20222". The $10 donation by text will be charged to your phone bill.
Doctors Without Borders had teams already in Haiti who witnessed the effects of the earthquake first-hand on January 12, according to their website. By donating online to their Emergency Relief Fund here, your funds will go towards medical programs in Haiti and other areas facing medical crises.
The humanitarian organization CARE is working to get water purification supplies to the people of Haiti. They hope to soon be able to distribute food and shelter-related items such as mosquito nets and bedding. To donate online to CARE, click here.
Hope for Haiti has been able to get 75,000 pounds of supplies as well as several medical professionals to a hospital site near the capital of Haiti. To help fund additional efforts to help earthquake survivors, an online donation can be made here.
