In order to help a situation or a group of individuals, one must understand the situation(s) in which he/she is attempting to aid. The homeless are often viewed as drug addicts who were just released from jail due to a robbing the local drug store. This is, in fact, not usually the case. One must help to dispel the rumors and stereotypes that are such prominent beliefs regarding the homeless. Each homeless person has a unique personality, and more importantly, a unique story.
Secondly, a respectful relationship is essential. If the homeless are not being respected by your end, the situation will not be relieved any way. Keep in mind that the homeless are still humans. They are not an extension of a wild animal and do not deserve to be treated like one. Treat the homeless in the same manner you would treat your employer, family, or friends. Contrary to popular belief, the homeless are not numb to harsh words and rude stares. A simple sign of respect will truly go a long way.
Furthermore, developing a list of shelters may prove to be beneficial in the huge endeavor of helping the homeless. Simply carry a card listing local homeless shelters and/or soup kitchens. Respond to the list with more than just a blatant stare; go out and help!
In addition to understanding and developing a list of shelters to help the homeless, donating recylables will also help the homeless. In areas where a law restricting and limiting the collection of bottles, collecting cans and bottles is usually the only "job", so to speak, that the homeless can partake in. Collecting bottles is a job that requires much initiative. A large city is a great spot to find recylables. Also, leave your recylables outside for the homeless to pick up. Saving your recyclable newspapers, cans, and bottles is a great step in helping the homeless.
Donate old clothes! What is the point in disposing of perfectly good, usable clothes? The next time spring cleaning arrives, keep an open eye out for the clothes that you no longer want but still remain in good shape. Gather these clothes up and donate them to an organization that will help the homeless by donating these clothes to them.
Volunteering your hobbies is not only a nice way to get out of the house, but it could also be a way to successfully help the homeless! Everybody has a talent and a hobby. Whatever your interests are, put them to use! Cook for the homeless if you are a talented cook. Take photographs for the homeless if you love photography. Believe it or not, simply showing a homeless person your hobbies may open up his/her mind to a new avenue and possibly lead them out of their devastating situation.
Granted, the overwhelming homeless situation currently plaguing our country is not going to be cured overnight, or even over the course of a year. However, taking five minutes out of your busy schedule each day and devoting those few minutes to a greater cause will go a long way years from now.
