How to Help the Homeless Animals of Project Hope Humane Society in Metropolis, Illinois

Kennedy
When searching on the Project Hope Humane Society website for the Metropolis,IL facility, I found approximately 50 pets listed that needed owners. The shelter gets new orphans everyday and I'm sure that it's hardly a complete list, because sadly, it's a regular occurence for someone to leave their former pet standing on the side of the road whether healthy or injured. This Project Hope safe haven for animals is a no kill shelter, taking in injured and healthy animals as well. Some animals are put down at different places when they simply have a broken leg or other curable ailment. These loving people aim to prevent this from happening and try to save every animal they possibly can.

The Metropolis Humane Society tries to keep the pet homeless population at a minimum by spaying and neutering rather than detroying the animals as typical shelters do. They do like to have the pets fixed prior to adoption as well. This helps the new owners to concentrate on caring for their new pet without worrying about having to spay or neuter. Doing so helps to keep the amount of abandoned and homeless animals to a minimum. Some cities have such a large population of animals that those which are usually tamed pets, are growing up and living in the wild. These animals are called ferrell animals, and they survive by scavenging and raiding trash and dumpsters. Sometimes the population of ferrell animals grows so large that local efforts can not contain them. A large population of cats may cause a decrease in the bird population. These animals can be a nuisance, but they can carry rabies which is a serious public health issue. Owners throwing away their animals who have never had them spayed or neutered causes the ferrell population to grow.

If you would like to help Project Hope and the animals they care for, you can contact your local shelter. They accept paypal and monetary gifts (which are tax deductible), as well as gifts of pet related care items. Currently, the Metropolis, IL facility needs volunteers that can walk the dogs, provide attention to the cats, clean, feed, mow, do laundry, answer phones, write letters, and transport animals for care, hold fundraisers, and work on newsletters. Vehicles for trasnporting animals such as vans, skilled workers who are willing to volunteer services to make the shelter more efficient are always welcome. The shelter also takes items for donation to be auctioned on ebay for the purpose of raising money to care for the pets. You may also help by dropping off any of the following items: laundry supplies, dish soaps, paper supplies like paper towels, copy paper, business envelopes, stamps and thank you cards, cleaning brushes and sponges, stainless steel food and water bowls, straw and wood chips for bedding, dog and cat treats, and litter. Volunteers may download their web form or directly from the site or contact the Metropolis shelter by calling 618-524-8939, the address is P.O. Box 125, 1698 West 10th St. Metropolis,IL 62960.
