Set an Example
Many parents are eager to point out that their kids need to lose weight. Unfortunately, many of those parents fail to take their own advice. You cannot expect kids to lose weight if you too have a problem with your own weight. You need to set an example by eating healthy and exercising. Kids don't know what they need to do to lose weight, but you do. Make time to share healthy meals together and get out and exercise together by playing ball or going for a walk.
Offer Choices
Kids need to feel a sense of control and eating and exercising is no exception. Instead of forcing certain fruits and vegetables on your children or trying to make them do a form of exercise, offer them choices. Take them grocery shopping and let them pick out healthy foods that appeal to them. Also look for fun activities that promote weight loss. It may be sports, interactive video games or physical games. Either way, offering kids a choice makes it eating for them to lose weight.
Make It Fun
Kids are the same as adults, they will not stick with a program that isn't fun. Thankfully, there a number of ways to make losing weight a fun experience. You can choose tasty, low calorie snacks to add to their lunch boxes, purchase a new video game that burns calories and start a goal chart. A goal chart can spark a child's desire to lose weight by offering a reward system. For example, with each pound a child loses, she could get a small prize. With every 5 pounds, she could get a larger prize.
Don't Criticize
The absolute worst thing you can do to your kids is make them feel bad about their weight. You should never tell a child they are fat or attempt to make him self-conscious about his weight. This can lead to food disorders in both females and males. Instead, encourage healthy habits and focus on their accomplishments. Explain the importance of a healthy lifestyle, without being negative.
