How to Help Kids with Writers Block

Mrs. Renee
Just like adults many kids get writers block. It can sometimes be a challenge for them to come up with a creative story. As kids gets older they are expected to do a lot more creative writing than they have every done before. So how can you help your child to get through their writers block?

The first thing that you can do is allow them to take a break. It can be a snack break, or just a relaxing break. If your child is trying to complete a homework assignment it may simply be that they need to take a short break. Remember that they have been in school all day, and now have to do more work. A fifteen minute break possibly with a snack is often a good way to break writers block. Even just taking a short fifteen minute walk outside can be enough to get them over the block.

Another suggestion is to help them. For younger children they may not know where to start with their writing. Often once kids get past the first few sentences their creativity starts to flow again. Why not sit down and see if you can help them get started. You don't want to do the assignment for them, but you can offer a few suggestions on how they can get started.

Writing down a list of ideas is another way that some children get over their writers block. You can have your child make a list of one word ideas that pertain to the subject they are writing about. They simple think about the topic and write down any words that come to mind. They can then see if they can build off of the words that they have writing. The main idea is to give them sort of a jumpstart. The one thing you don't want is for your child to get to the point where they are so stressed they get a headache or don't want to do anymore work. It is very easy for a young child to become discouraged or overly stressed. As a parent you will want them to find ways to overcome their writers block without the added stress. Why not try some of the suggestions above the next time your child experiences writers block. You can even take the time to think of your own creative tips and ideas on how you can help your child overcome their writers block.
