How to Help a Loved One With Weight Problems

Telling someone they need to lose some weight is difficult. Telling a family member or a loved one that they need to lose weight can be nearly impossible. It's almost silly, but those who love us the most, often hurt our feelings the most when they deliver such a message. What can you do when someone you know may be putting their life at risk by being overweight. Here are a few ideas:

Have a heart to heart. This is the most direct way to reach someone. Obviously it may not always be easy. If someone you know is struggling with their weight, invite them to a cup of coffee or out for dinner to discuss the issue. Make sure in your conversation that you emphasize that you love the person and care for them. It is your love that has caused you to be concerned. Let them know you are concerned for their health and well being for the long term. If you present your side in a sensitive way, you may get them to listen to you.

Be an example. If you are not a vocal person this might be the better route. Keep your self in good shape and eat healthy. Let it be known to those around you of the importance of staying in shape and living a healthy life. If your loved ones see you taking care of yourself, exercising and eating healthy, they may decide to jump on ship. As the old saying goes, you have to practice what you preach. Be an example for those you care about.

Invite them to workout with you. People always seem to do a better job in their workouts when they have someone who they are accountable to. Invite your family member to workout with you. Encourage them to join you. You don't even have to focus on the fact that they need to exercise. Put the focus on you. Let them know that you need someone to join you. Tell them you want some company while working out.

Provide literature and video. Sometimes a good book can give a person a jump start. Maybe for Christmas or an upcoming birthday you can pass along a good book that will give someone motivation. Remember to be careful not to be too pushy. You don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but if you can get the book in their hands, they may just read it.

Pray for them. There is an old saying, you can lead a horse to water but...., well you know how the saying goes. The truth is you can make someone do something they don't want to do. They have to have the will and determination to get the job done themselves. Say a prayer for them, continue to be an example and continue to encourage them. In the end it's up to them to make the changes.
