How to Help Low-Income Families This Christmas when on a Budget
Tips for Donating This Holiday Season
So, what can you do? Continue reading on for a few helpful tips.
Visit your local dollar store. The Dollar Tree has a toy donation box in many of their stores. Some cashiers will encourage you to donate a dollar for a toy, but you can also choose the toy yourself. Yes, dollar stores do have cheap and sometimes low-quality toys, but it is important to remember the point. It isn't always about what the child gets for Christmas, but the fact that they do have a gift to open that morning.
For that reason, visit your local dollar store. If you shop at a dollar store without a toy donation box, still buy an extra toy. You can drop it off at other donation boxes around town. For boys, it is always easy to find toy cars and small action figures at dollar stores. For girls, dress up clothes and accessories are good. Plus, most dollar stores are home to a large selection of arts and crafts supplies, crayons, coloring books, reading books, and puzzles. These types of toys are perfect for any gender.
Contact your local elementary school. Around the holidays, many schools collect information on low-income families, especially children who need gifts. For example, our school has a Christmas tree in the lobby with ornament tags. Personally, I found each of these tags to be realistic. No one asked for anything extravagant. My tag stated the 6-year-old needed mittens, hats, and liked Barbies. So, I bought a Barbie for $5 from Wal-Mart and purchased the hat and mittens from the Dollar Tree.
Shop at discount retailers. Discount retailers include stores like Wal-Mart, Family Dollar, and Dollar General. Not only can you find cheap toys, but food and toiletries. It is ideal to donate a toy for a low-income child on Christmas, but remember the necessities too. By shopping at a discount retailer, you can purchase toilet paper for $1, canned goods for around .50 cents each, and so forth.
Look for good sales on toys. If your main intent is to help a low-income child by donating a Christmas gift, shop at a dollar store or look for the best deals. I mentioned above, how I purchased a Barbie for $5 from Wal-Mart. A few weeks later, K-Mart had those same dolls on sale for $2.99 each. I purchased a few and dropped them in the toy donation box in the front of the store. By searching for good sales, you don't have to be rich to help a low-income family or child.
Make use of buy one, get one free sales at the grocery store. Returning back to helping families as a whole, the easiest way to do so is at the grocery store. Many stores are hosting food drives, with donation boxes right in front. By finding buy one, get one free sales, you don't have to pay anything! Look for sales on staples or foods that are ideal for Christmas dinner, but any type of food donation will be greatly appreciated.
In short, it is more than possible to help a low-income family this Christmastime, even if you are shopping on a budget yourself. Shop at dollar stores, discount stores, stores with good prices, and lookout for sales that significantly lower the price of gifts for children and food.
