How to Help Others When They Are Sick

Sophie
People fall sick all throughout the year, with such common ailments as colds, flu, seasonal allergies and so forth. What can you do to help others and cheer them up when they are sick?

How to help others when they are sick #1 Watch what you say!

How often have you told someone who is sick "Give me a call if you need anything?" How likely is it that they will pick up the phone and call? The person saying this is no doubt being sincere, but it is a vague statement and does not really help. It is better to ask a sick person what they need to help them make a quicker recovery. Be specific and ask if you can stop by the pharmacy and get them some medicine. Get them what they need and then take it round to them. This will be appreciated more readily than the general sweeping statement we are all a little guilty of using when someone is sick.

How to help others when they are sick #2 Make them some brownies

Some people who are sick will not feel like eating brownies, but for those who do not have a stomach complaint, they may really appreciate it if you bake them a batch of brownies. It shows that you have been thinking of them, if nothing else.

How to help someone when they are sick #3 Visit them

This would not be a good idea if a person has a contagious illness like chicken pox. But it is usually a good idea to visit people and take along a bunch of flowers or some other small gift when someone is sick.

How to help someone when they are sick #4 Babysit their children

Parents who are sick will find it harder to take care of their children. The doctor may even suggest that someone else care for the children if the parents have a contagious illness, so that the children are not also infected. This should only be a temporary measure though, as children will often start to miss their parents after a while.

How to help someone when they are sick #5 Listen to them

A lot of people become quite depressed when they are not well. So help them by listening to them and offer comfort. That is usually all that is needed, as most people will not be able to help out in any other way. Take the time to listen, even if it is just over the phone. The sick person will be glad you made the effort and that they are in your thoughts.

How to help someone when they are sick #6 Send a get well card

If the person lives far away, show your support by sending a get well card. It will help cheer someone up and assure them of your care and good wishes, even though you cannot visit them.
