How to Help Your Parents Eat Healthier and Make Better Food Choices

Carter Boylston
Even though my parents cared about my siblings very much while we were growing up, they weren't so good at choosing the most nutritious food for us. So, as we got older, my brothers, sisters, and I have always tried to help our parents make better food choices for themselves. This trend is going to be increasingly common as parents get older and live longer than they have in the past. Here are some tips to make the process of helping your parents eat healthier even easier. In the long run, this should save on medical bills and keep your parents happier and healthier for longer.

Healthy Eating Tip for Parents #1: Be Patient

Since our parents have been around longer, they have potentially gotten into a routine with their eating habits that they feel comfortable with. Breaking the habit of eating high cholesterol foods or those pumped with artificial ingredients is about as difficult as quitting smoking. You will likely feel frustrated that they can't pick up on how to shop correctly within a short amount of time. Think of helping your parents eat healthier as a long term project that will come about in small steps.

Healthy Eating Tip for Parents #2: Start With One Thing

Helping parents eat healthier is too general of a goal that can often seem insurmountable. Working with your parents, figure out the top foods that they are consuming that could easily be changed. One of the best places to start is with soda. Help them by substituting soda with things like iced herbal teas, sparkling water, and drink mixes like Crystal Light. Once they become comfortable with these drinks, you should be able to help them switch to plain drinking water. This type of thinking is crucial to the next tip.

Healthy Eating Tip For Parents #3: Think Of Intermediate Changes

Parents, just like children, can't often go from eating junk food to completely healthy food in a short time span. If your parents enjoy high cholesterol beef dishes, try helping them by introducing dishes like chilis that still have meaty flavors but also the health benefits of beans and vegetables. Then, it will make it easier for your parents to accept leaner meats or even meat replacement products such as Boca Burgers.

Healthy Eating Tip for Parents #4: Go Shopping With Them

Reading labels gets more and more confusing each day. Food manufacturers are getting more deceptive with the way they label the packaging. Your parents could easily be deceived by products that make them think they are eating healthier but they're really choosing products filled with unhealthy artificial ingredients. Try accompanying your parents to the grocery store and make comparisons between what products are healthy and which ones aren't. It will be helpful to take notes on what they choose so you can put together a shopping guide for them for their solo shopping trips.

Taking interest in your parents' health shows that you care about their health and well being. However, ingrained habits and eating patterns aren't easily changed. But the satisfaction you will feel as you see your parents becoming healthier and making better choices will be overwhelming.
