How to Help Your Significant Other when They Become Unemployed

Lauren Romano
When your significant other loses their job, especially if they get laid off, they are going to need your help through the difficult situation. How you help, or don't help, your significant other can make a big difference. Instead of letting the situation cause a rift, find a way to pull together and be stronger as a team to get through it.

Use words of encouragement instead of being negative when your significant other becomes unemployed

No one wants to hear that they are a "failure" or that they "obviously did something wrong" because they got a pink slip. Instead, offer words of encouragement such as "I'm here to help if you need me" and "We'll get through this together." Your significant other will probably feel quite down, so knowing that they have a strong support system can mean everything.

Help your significant other look for jobs when he or she becomes unemployed

You can rely on them to look for jobs or you can help them possibly shorten the time that they're unemployed by searching a bit yourself. There are days when your significant other may be down on themselves or may just be very busy and won't look. During this time, a promising job can come and go quickly. Take a look online and in newspapers and forward them any jobs that may be beneficial for them to apply to, just make sure that they are also doing something to change their situation as well.

Plan inexpensive date nights when your significant other becomes unemployed

Chances are when date nights are planned as a couple, there are going to have to be some changes as far as how money is going to be spent. Consider doing dates that can get both of you out of the house, but that are enjoyable and don't cost a lot of money. Make an attempt to avoid places where food is going to have to be purchased as dining out can sometimes be the most expensive part of the date. Your significant other may be a little down in the dumps about the loss of the job, but an enjoyable date where a lot of money isn't spent may be just what's needed to help lift the spirits.

Imagine if you were in your significant other's position, then do for them what you would want done for you. While everyone is different, you can be there for them and listen to what they want and need. With a supportive significant other by their side to help them through a rough time, the situation may be just a little be easier to deal with.
