How to Help Solve Your Own Case: Leaving Forensic Evidence

F.D.Burgess
The field of forensic science has gained popularity over the last few years with the advent of several television shows based on the subject. We know what type of evidence is needed to solve cases so why not leave as much as we can to help solve crimes against our person. It will be almost impossible for the perpetrator to get rid of so much evidence. Detectives frequently state that criminals always leave something (forensic evidence) at the scene of the crime and take something with them. There are many ways we as victims can do the same in order to help solve a crime, plant our own forensic evidence.

• If bleeding, spread as much as you can on any surface visible and inconspicuous. Blood is the number one source of DNA. If necessary, bite your lip or tongue to bleed.

• Hair comparison is not as definitive in most cases, unless the strands are pulled from the scalp. DNA can be analyzed from any skin tags on the hair root.

• Saliva is a good source of DNA-whether in a home or vehicle leave sputum and saliva in as many places as possible.

• Evidence under the fingernails, such as skin and fibers can assist in making a case when suspect is found.

• Facial scars and scratches are difficult for the perpetrator to cover up or explain, try to leave as many as you can.

• DNA may also be obtained in urine so if possible, try to urinate on car seats, carpets, etc. It sounds gross but it is valuable evidence.

• Vomiting may be elicited by putting finger in the back of your throat. Knowledge of stomach contents is also of evidentiary value.

• Fingerprints placed strategically on all available surfaces, especially on windows, doors, and mirrors of a vehicle. Touch as many surfaces as you can.

• Biting not only the perpetrator but any surface leaves evidence. One kidnapped child actually left a bite mark on the leather door panel, which later helped detectives identify the exact car she rode in once a suspect was known. Major human bites must be medically treated due to the high risk of infection.

• Rubbing your foot in the carpet can transfer fibers for analyzing.

• Leaving threads from your clothing can be used the same as carpet fibers.

• Scratching yourself and leaving skin cells behind also may help when gathering evidence for cases.

• Never take a bath after being sexually assaulted. A rape kit will be utilized in the emergency room to gather semen evidence. If you are forced to bathe, avoid thoroughly cleansing your body, place toilet paper inside the vaginal vault to preserve evidence.

• If possible, leave a written note of any identifying information such as a name, tag number, etc. especially if you experience a car breakdown and have to accept a ride.

• Always tell someone else where you will be and who you will be with, especially if dating someone new. Let the person hear you tell someone so he will know there is at least one other person aware of who he is.

• Most of all avoid being a victim and stay safe.
