How to Help Your Teenager Cope with Depression

Casey C
The worst feeling ever is to not have any control in how your child feels or to help them when they are depressed. All parents want their children to grow up happy and successful. When parents have to deal with a teenager who is suffering from depression it can be exhausting. Trying to help your teenager deal with depression and then failing, can be one of the worst things a parent can go through.

First off never think you can cure your teenagers depression, this is not something for you or the child to treat or diagnose. Seek medical attention immediately and do not ignore the signs of depression. Your teenager can not cure this depression on their own.

Start out by making it clear to your teenager that you are there for them and you always will be, no matter what the circumstances are. At first make sure you do not ask a lot of questions, as teenagers don't like to feel patronized or crowded. Just let them know you are there to support them.

When talking to your teenager for the first time about their depression never criticize or pass judgment upon them. It is not easy for teenagers to talk about depression so let them take their time. Do not give up if your child shuts you out at first, stay in your child's comfort level. Let them know your concern and willingness to listen.

Do not shut out other family members or keep your teenagers depression a secret. Allow other family members to be concerned and to ask questions. Make sure you take care of yourself even going to support groups for help is a positive thing. You must stay healthy and positive to help a teenager with depression. It is fine to feel frustrated, angry and helpless but you must get it out and discuss it with others. Make sure you do this instead of letting these emotions build up. Talking to friends, family, or even a therapist will help you.

Listen and understand what your teenager is saying even if you think it's silly or irrational. Understand the pain and sadness they are going through. Do not think your teenager is doing this just for attention.

If you think your teenager is suffering from depression seek medical help. Find the right antidepressant that will best help your teenager cope with their depression. If you do not treat this serious, later you will wish you had if your teenager takes fate in their own hands.
