How to Help Your Wife After a C-Section: Preparing the Home

Evan Nash
A cesarean section (C-Section) surgery for a woman can be extremely difficult and overwhelmingly painful and men should be keenly aware of this. It is not in the nature of a lot of men to be overly nurturing and sensitive to their wives, but this is a time when it is needed and you should do all that you can. After your wife goes through this surgery there are a few things that you can do around the house to make sure it is ready for her arrival.
  1. Build Up Your Couch: This sounds strange but there is really no better way to say it, you need to make it so that your couch has a high entry point. Instead of going down low the couch needs to be able to be accessed by barely bending over. Your wife's stomach muscles have been cut open and cut up and bending over is ridiculously painful. Make a very high, very comfortable spot on the couch for your wife to be able to rest and relax.
  2. Get a Step Stool for the Bed: Again, the concern is for your wife to be able to have a way to get in to bed without having to use much of her stomach muscles. Putting in a step stool makes it where she can almost step in to bed and avoid having to bend over at all. Obviously she will have to start bending at some point to start recovering, but she deserves several days break after this ordeal.
  3. Have Bland Foods on Hand: Many women completely lose their appetite after having a C-Section and will only respond to bland foods. Sandwich meat, peanut butter and the like will be winners and you should be preparing all of it for her.
For most men, being sensitive and aware of our surroundings takes a little more work than to just be awake. We must consider all of the things around us that could possibly cause a struggle for our wife who has just been through so much. It could take your wife a few weeks to a few months to start feeling ok again and you will have two people to take care of. Give her time to deal with what has just happened, this can be a very traumatic experience. Make sure that you are being sensitive to her needs and preparing things around her to make it as easy as possible to function.
