How to Make an Herbal Knot Garden

What is a knot Garden you might ask? Well, a knot garden is a very formal type of garden that is cut and shaped to look like they are growing in knot. They represent medieval embroideries and are very dry hard to keep up. They have to be so meticulously tended to in order to keeping their knotted shape.

I am going to give you some basic tips on how to create your own knot herbal garden. Now if you are a person who is detailed oriented and quite a perfectionist then you will love this project. If you are someone who procrastinates and is not detailed oriented then you might have a problem with project.

The reason is that this project really requires a lot of your attention. You have a lot of cutting, caring and shaping that will have to be done on a regular basis. If you are not willing to do the work this project will fail. This project will require a lot grooming.

Now that I have given you a fair disclaimer let me give you a few ideas about making your own herb knot garden. My first recommendation is to keep it simple. Keeping it simple to start with is more of realistic goal, but it still has a real dynamic effect.

Next you want to get some color up in there! You can use colored mulches and stone to give you herb garden a more intricate design. Go to your local nursery and take a look at what kind of mulches they have and pick whatever color stands out to you! The cool thing about mulches is that many of them only need to be manicured a couple times a year. You can ask the manager of the nursery which one needs to be tended to the least.

My next tip is to plant extra. You always want to have extra plant life because something is always bound to die. Especially if you are new to herbal planting you might experience more plant deaths then you expected at first. So just make sure you plant extra, I would even say to plant double of what you were originally planning to plant.

Herb Knot gardens work best if you have dwarf herbs. You can ask your local nursery to find you herbs that will grow as dwarf and won't reach to their normal height. The best herbs to get for this project are lavender, thyme and chamomile. These will fill out better and you can shape these better into more of a hedged look.
