What a publicist does.
One of the first steps a publicist makes is to meet with you and discuss such things as specific projects, goals, timing and goals. After the initial meeting the publicist will ask you for you background material such as your bio, press clips, and press releases so he/she can build a portfolio for you. The publicist then contacts all the media outlets at his/her resources that are related to your specific field.
Do you really need a publicist?
One way to know this is if you find yourself without time to dedicate to your craft because you are your own publicist you probably do need to hire one. If you are a writer and your publisher is swamped with other writers you might want to invest in a publicist of your own to promote your writing. Finally if you do not have the right contacts in your field or if you are just uncomfortable in doing your own publicity you should look for one.
There are two specific situations when you do not need to hire a publicist.
One is if you know nothing about how the media operates or how a publicist goes about promoting your specific talent. If you do not know these things you could get ripped of by a less than credible publicist. The second is if you do not want to spend any time at all working with the publicist. Even though you hire a publicist he/she will need a lot of your input to promote you the best they can. If you do not have the time to spend then do not spend the money either.
What to watch for in hiring a publicist.
Smooth talk without being able to back it up. Keep in mind good publicist are smooth talkers just be sure they can back up what they say. Some publicists pay the most attention to the person that pays the most. Make sure your publicist gives equal attention to all his or her clients. Be sure to check out the publicist with places such as the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org), your local Chamber of Commerce and The Public Relations Society of America (prsa.org) to validate credibility.
All in all hiring a publicist can be very beneficial to your career. Picking a publicist that you can work with and fits your needs is very important. Be careful and if you connect with the right publicist I will see you in the media.

Post a CommentI would like to hire a publicist, but I need to work better at editing my writings. I often find my work with run-on sentences, misspelled words, incorrect grammar, etc. Usually I don't see these mistakes until after I publish something because I didn't take enough time editing my work.
You could almost say the same for my artwork as well.
