How to Hit a Better Topspin

The Informer
What is a topspin? In tennis, a topspin refers to that characteristic of a shot wherein the ball rotates, seemingly, in the same direction it is moving towards. What a topspin does is to give to the ball a downward force, causing it to drop due to the ball's interaction with the air.

For a topspin, there are a few things that you can do to improve it. Below are some of the areas that you can focus on:

The first thing you need to take a look at is the grip that you will be using. To get the most topspin, you can use a full, western grip. You also need to practice being mobile on your feet. Doing a topspin will require you to make quick adjustments in your movements.

If you are serving and are aiming for a topspin, the ideal position is said to be the one similar to the backhand. Rotating the hands 90 degrees counter-clockwise from the axe grip (the standard ready position) will achieve this. This helps you maximize the 'brushing' effect on the face of your racket. This 'brushing' effect will create the topspin once your racket makes contact with the ball when you swing.

For the service, as well, make sure that it is positioned back and slightly left (for right-handers - right for left-handers). When you toss it, hit it once the toss reaches its apex to generate the maximum amount of topspin.

To add more power to your topspin, you can make use of more upward body movement. Ideally, you should have your knees bent before making a shot. You can jump up from this position, propelling yourself upward and making the shot while you are slightly airborne. This will increase your chances of making a good topspin.

You also need to keep your head steady, figuratively and literally. A steady head will also make for a more balanced shot. You need to be able to focus on the ball and not looking around the court.

Of course, after you do make the shot, just make sure that you quickly prepare your racket in position. It will make for a better shot and will also help ensure that you are not caught unaware when your opponent hits the ball back towards you. Just keep practicing on your topspin serves and shots even in-between games to make for a better performance on the court. How to
