How to Make Your Holidays Less Stressful

Susan
This time of year, we all have more on our plates than anyone can chew. There will come a moment when you think to yourself:

"Self, why do I do this?"

Great question. Why do we take on so many tasks, spend too much money, and give of ourselves until there is nothing left to give? We have good reasons when it all comes to an end, and we know we will jump through the same hoops next year. Take a moment of your time (and take a breather!) and find some ways to make your holidays less stressful.

Make a list.

If you get it out of your head, and on paper, you will stop worrying about it. Make lists for holiday dinner shopping, people to buy presents for, and chores to get done before guests arrive. A bonus: put the "Chores" list on the fridge in hopes someone will pitch in and help. If you don't think you'll get your much deserved assistance, put names beside certain chores. Delegating will help you get through it. Once something on your list in taken care of, throw that list away. Reward yourself for a job well done. If will be a big weight off your shoulders and an elegant dinner and a movie with someone special will make it worth finishing that list.

Wrap as you go.

If you are purchasing a lot of gifts (or even if you're not!) for the holidays, wrap them as soon as you bring them home from the store. This way, you won't find yourself in your living room floor in a tidal wave of presents, paper, and bows at the last minute. In-store gift wrapping has become one advantage of shopping at particular stores. If you happen to purchase something from a store that offers this service, there is absolutely nothing wrong with letting them gift wrap your present. It will save you time and headaches in the end.

Gifts from the heart.

If you're worried about not having money to buy everyone that perfect gift this year, don't! There are plenty of gifts that are inexpensive or even free! Here are some ideas:

· Gift certificates for a job that you can do are always appreciated. Babysitting, haircuts, grass-cutting, or simply spending an hour with someone you love can be a great gift.

· Homemade meals or baked goods can take a big burden off someone with no time or someone that just can't cook like they used to. This gift is inexpensive and people always love homemade meals and desserts. A lot of people don't have the time to cook these days, and if they do, they'd probably love to have a night off!

· Crafts can be a treasure to family and friends as well. A photo collection, collage frame, or scrapbook of pictures over the years can bring back memories for your loved one that you just can't buy in the store. You can purchase materials for this gift at any local department store for a very inexpensive gift.

Say no.

It sounds mean, but there will come a time when you simply have to say no. Just as you're wrapping the last gift, your two-year-old has de-ornamented the tree, and the smoke alarm is screaming to alert you that the cookies are done, someone will ask you to make costumes for the school play. You will have a time like this when you will have to respectfully decline in order to save your sanity. You can explain this in your decline, and your pursuer will completely understand, because they are in the same boat that you are in.

Following one or all of these ideas will help your holidays go smoother and maybe even save you a few grey hairs! Here's hoping that your holidays become less stressful over the years. Don't worry, experience is knowledge and you will find easier and better ways to do everything in the coming years. Remember: work smarter, not harder.
