How to Make Your Home Baby-Safe

What Needs to Be Done

Babies are in to everything! No matter what it is, they usually want to play with everything else in the house except for the toys they have. It's extremely important to make sure your home is safe for your child to roam in. So many children get hurt every day due to accidents in the home and some of them are very easy to avoid. Please take the necessary precautions that you need to for your better state of mind and your little one's well-being.

There are several things that you will need to do to make sure your child is safely away from harm. First off, make sure you have outlet plugs in all of your electrical outlets. This will prevent your child from sticking object in the outlets and help keep them away from a potentially dangerous situation. Outlet plugs are very inexpensive and you'll never make a better investment. They are not easy for a baby to pull out of the wall, but you should still always keep a very close watch on your child just in case.

Next, make sure you have locks on all of your cabinets, especially where you might keep your cleaning supplies. Cabinet locks are also very inexpensive and easy to install. Under your cabinets is not a safe place for your child to be playing, so make sure you have them locked up to prevent your child from getting into something that could harm him/her. Most cabinet locks will allow the cabinet to open about one inch and then you must press down on the lock to open the cabinet completely. Many children will eventually figure out how to get in the cabinets, but it is a precaution you should take even still.

Be sure that anything your baby can climb up on is secure to avoid an accident. Television stands can be extremely dangerous to little ones as they will try to pull themselves up and the television or something else could fall on top of them. It's highly important to make sure any bookshelves, tables, or desks are all properly secured to keep baby away from getting seriously hurt.

For crawlers and new walkers, you should make sure that all small items are always off of the floor and far out of their reach. It is way too easy for a baby to get chocked on a small item that they pick up from the floor. We all know that babies have to put everything directly in their mouths, so save yourself and your baby from this unnecessary event. You should also keep your floors vacuumed and/or mopped well to keep your child from getting dust and dirt in their mouths. If you have pets, this is even more important, as they will shed hair and could cause children to have allergic reactions or even develop asthma.

You may use gates to help keep your little one in a room or help keep the pets out. These gates are usually between $10 and $30 and are well worth your money. Once babies learn to crawl, there is no stopping them! Gates come in very handy and they, as well, can help to keep baby away from harmful situations sometimes.

Get corner cushions for all of your sharp corners. This is so very important! Children love to run and play, but the are clumsey! Buy yourself some corner cusions for your coffee table, dining room table, entertainment center, computer desk, or anything else that has a sharp edge to it. You may also purchase cushions that will fit all the way around your table. Which ever you prefer, make sure you put them to use, they will be more helpful than you ever dreamed.

Making sure your home is safe for your child is crucial. Children get hurt from accidents around the home than anything else and you can help to prevent many of those accidents. Sure, not all accidents can be prevented, but you can certainly put your mind somewhat at ease by making your home safe for your child to play. Walk through your home and look closely at every minor thing that your child could possibly get hurt on. If it takes putting pillows all around your brick fireplace or gates all through your house, at least it is safe for your baby. Help prevent accidents by creating a safer play environment for your child. You will be thankful that you did!
