How Home Energy Audits Can Help You Save Money for Years to Come

Getting a home energy audit can be compared to getting a physical or a routine checkup. It's like having an inspection of your car and doing preventative maintenance. It's about preventing problems or finding them early and stopping them from getting worse or curing them completely. A home energy audit is about saving you money in the future as well as now.

A home energy audit is simply a checklist of things you can do to cut down energy costs. Yes, it will cost you an inspection fee for the professional's analysis of your home's energy rating. But it may very well be a fee that you will be repaid many times over by the amount of money you save by simply heeding the advise of the home inspector. The cost of the home energy audit is money well spent if you follow the recommendations as much as possible. Of course, there may be some things you just can't financially afford, but you will have a list to work on. Every item listed will help save energy, therefore saving you money. And you can keep working on the list as you can afford to.

One of the first things a home energy auditor will look at is your furnace and/or air conditioning units. If your units are old, they are probably costing you quite a lot to keep them running. The newer furnaces of today have a much higher efficiency rating than the older models. If your furnace needs replacing or is constantly breaking down, you should seriously consider replacing it as soon as possible. It may actually save you money to replace the furnace. In fact, the amount you save on your monthly heating could warm your heart while the new furnace is warming your home.

Just as important as your furnace and air conditioning unit is the amount of insulation you have in your home. You may have heard people say their energy bills are going through the roof. Well, it's very possible it is, literally. Many people have the walls well insulated, but forget about the attics and under the floors. You lose a tremendous amount of energy through the roof and floors. By insulating them properly, you will slash your energy costs.

And of course one can't forget the windows and doors of a home. New windows today are not only energy efficient, they are beautiful. And they come in so many different types and shapes. Do I sound like a window salesman? Oh, well. By replacing the windows in your home with double paned windows, you will no only save energy, you will add a great amount of value to your home. Windows can be expensive, though, so start with the ones that you feel will save you the most. Or do one room at a time. Every one replaced is energy saved.

Some of these items may be beyond your reach, at least now. But there are still many suggestions a home energy auditor can give you to help you save money that don't actually cost a lot of money. For example, replacing weatherstripping around doors and windows will help cut down on your energy costs. Or even simple ideas like turning the thermostat down during the day if no one is home. You will definitely benefit from a home energy audit and in today's world, every dollar saved on energy costs is another dollar to spend on life's other little necessities.
