If you suffer from heartburn or acid reflux symptoms here are a few tried and true home remedies that will help work to make you feel better.

Try eating an apple.

Eating an apple can work wonders for relieving and getting rid of heartburn. This is especially true if eaten a couple of hours before bedtime because quite often heartburn worsens when a person is lying down.

Mix Baking Soda and Water

This is another quick acting home remedy that works really well in relieving heartburn and acid reflux symptoms. Simply mix one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it all up. Goes to work fast.

Take a Spoon Full of Sugar

Based on an old wives tale but said to be effective, eat one teaspoon of light or dark brown sugar. Not only works, but is tasty too.

Give Mustard a Try

For the braver of heart, a teaspoon of mustard can also help to eliminate acid reflux or heartburn. It is recommended that you use yellow mustard, but some have claimed that brown mustard works just as well.

Try Ginger

Ginger is also great in counteracting the symptoms of heartburn (though I never tried this one myself). There are two different ways you can take ginger, either in capsule form or make a tea from the fresh root or powder. It works most effectively when taken approximately 20 minutes before a meal.

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Another home remedy for getting rid of heartburn is to mix a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink it down before a meal. If you prefer to skip the water, it can also be taken directly from the spoon.

Ways to Avoid Getting Heartburn in the first place.

Obviously one of the best ways to get rid of heartburn is to try avoiding it in the first place. Here are some things you can do to prevent heartburn and acid reflux.

Start to keep track of your triggers.

Different foods can cause heartburn in different people. It is important to find out what your trigger is. Anytime heartburn occurs take note of the severity and what you have recently eaten. You will probably see a pattern on what sets it off most often and what foods you will need to avoid for awhile.

Eat Slower and eat smaller portions.

Heartburn frequently occurs when someone eats too quickly or eats too much. Try to slow down and eat less on the run. Another added benefit to eating slowly is that you will usually end up eating less because your stomach will have a chance to signal that it is full before you have finished the entire meal.

Eat at least 3 hours before bedtime.

The most inopportune time to experience Heartburn is when you are trying to go to sleep. Be sure to eat at least 3 hours before going to bed to give your body time to digest before lying down.

Avoid clothes that are too tight.

Clothes that are too tight can surprisingly contribute to heartburn as well. Beware of extra tight waste bands or slimming undergarments, especially if worn during a meal.
