How to Home School Your Child

Norah Faith
With the demise of our public school systems, more and more parents are home schooling their children. With home schooling, parents can make sure that their children are getting the education they need, and in a safe environment.

If you do decide that home schooling is the way to go. then you will need a plan. Something you put together for the child's daily learning.

1. Decide which subjects your child should be learning and at what level.

You can shape the direction in which your child's education grows. You can add to the standard studies and give your child extra studies that interest him.

2. Find the teaching materials needed for your subjects.

Once you know the subjects to be learned, you can begin searching for the books and things needed to teach these subjects.

Books aren't the only form of learning anymore. You can now get complete courses on CD-ROM for just about any subject. You can even find complete courses online for grades one through twelve.

3. Be consistent.

You are now the teacher. Your child's complete education is now in your hands. You must be consistent with the lessons. Whether they are on a computer or in a book, you have to make sure the child does the lessons and is on a schedule. If you do not do this you will teach the child that chaos and laziness are ok. Take the time to sit with the child as much as you can when he's doing his lessons. Check all his work. Check for correctness and quality. Hand writing should be neat and correct.

4. Make it fun.

You can find many educational games on line for children. Jump Start is one of these games. You can search for it on Google to learn more.

Divide the child's time between raw studying and educational gaming. They will view the games as a reward for their hard work. Once the studies are complete, let the games begin.

Though old fashion books work just fine, having a computer opens up so many doors to knowledge. If you don't have one that your child can work on, I suggest you get one. Don't forget, being computer literate in today's world is a must. Your child will need at least a basic understanding of computers for college and a career.

Whether you use books or computers as tools for teaching your child, it falls on you to make sure he learns. If one method is not working, try a different one. Don't kid yourself by thinking your child can't learn. You simply have to find the right way to teach him.
