How to Make Your Home Winter Friendly for Kids

Mrs. Renee
Fall has just arrived and winter is on the way. There are plenty of articles and books that will tell you how get your home ready for the winter months. What many parents don't often think about is how you can make your home winter friendly for your kids. In the winter time, there is often bad weather that does not allow kids to play outside. When this happens you often have to find ways to entertain your kids inside. Even if you have a very small space inside of your home you can still create a space that will allow them to play without destroying the house. All it really takes is a little advance preparation. The list below includes several things that you can do to make your home winter friendly for your kids.

1. Pack away all summer toys- There are some toys that can only be used in the summer months outdoors. These toys can include bubble machines, and beach toys to name a few items. These toys should be cleaned and placed in storage bins. This will allow you plenty of room for the indoor winter toys.

2. Find your home play area- There are some who live in homes big enough to have a separate play rooms for their children. If you do not have a separate play room for your kids, than you can create one. Find an area in your home that you can designate as the indoor play area. This may mean giving up half of your living room. Or if you have a computer room, you can move your computer into your living room, and turn the small computer room into a play room. The space should be big enough to play all of your winter activities in, and have floor space for the kids to move around just a bit. If you have a basement, you can designate this area as a play room. Even the dingiest basement can be transformed into a play room for your kids.

3. Gather your winter board games. During the winter months board games definitely come in handy. This is especially important to have on hand during those snow days when the kids are off from school. You should try to have at least three to four board games on hand. There are many board games like monopoly, which are not only fun and family friendly but educational as well. You can purchase a storage bin or designate a shelf to hold your children's board games. All of their indoor toys and games should be gathered in one area.

4. Purchase games that get your kids moving. There are some video games such as the Wii which are perfect for indoor activities. This will help to keep your kids moving in a fun and safe way while indoors. If the Wii is too far out of your budget there are other more affordable games you can purchase such as the V-Motion which is great for younger children.

5. Create a game box. If you can not afford to purchase video games then why not make up your own fun indoor games that you can play as a family. This is a fun weekend activity for the fall months. You can have your children give you ideas for their own fun and unique games. Then bring them to life. Gather together all the materials you need to make your game and once complete store it with the rest of your games. Then when the kids are stuck indoors you can play it. These types of games can include a scavenger hunt for young kids or a sail boat race in the bathtub. There is a lot you can do with a child's imagination. With a little time and effort you can come up with some really great family games.

6. Stock up on snack ingredients. There are also plenty of fun baking activities that you can do during the winter months. Try looking online for creative cookies and different items you can have your kids make with you. Not only is it something fun to do but it will give the house a nice and warm feeling.

7. Decorate your designated play area. Since you have all of your toys and fun winter activities stored in one location, why not decorate the area to make it more fun. You can put up fun winter decorations all over the room. The kids will have loads of fun doing this. You can even take pictures of the kids decorating the area to add to your winter fun scrapbook.
