How to Make Homemade, All Natural, Organic Pet Food

Kelly Spies
Homemade pet food is a healthy alternative to commercial grade pet food. For a pet to rely nutritionally on commercial grade pet food is akin to humans relying on fast food for nutrition; it might taste great but it isn't as healthy as a home cooked meal. Commercial grade pet food contains fillers and indigestible ingredients such as corn and chicken beaks whereas making your own pet food allows you to add ingredients to fight flea control and help with joint problems. To successfully meet the nutritional value a pet needs, all natural, organic, homemade pet food is the way to go. In lieu of healthy pets, here is an assembly of healthy, organic, all natural dog and cat food recipes you make in your own kitchen.

*Note about these ingredients - Keep in mind your pet's favorite flavors. If your pet prefers chicken or beef then substitute with organic meat your pet likes. These ingredients are digestible by both cats and dogs.

Wet Pet Food - Stew
Ingredients:
1 whole organic game hen (no hormones or antibiotics)
1 cup rolled oats or brown rice
2 stalks of celery, chopped into bite size pieces
4 carrots, peeled and chopped into bite size pieces
1 cup peas
1 cup green beans
1 cup chopped zucchini
1 cup organic, low sodium chicken stock

Instructions:
1. Wash game hen in warm water.
2. Dump game hen and vegetables in a pot
3. Pour organic chicken stock over the top.
4. Add enough water for hen to float.
5. Add oats or rice.
6. Cook on low heat until game hen literally falls off the bone and vegetables are soft.
7. Remove hen from the pot and be sure to remove all the bones. Even the smallest bone can cause a pet to choke.
8. Pour the entire batch of stew (deboned game hen included) into a blender or food processor.
9. Blend or chop until stew is coarse and thick.
10. This recipe makes enough stew to last 3-4 days depending on how much your pet eats. Store stew in an airtight container in the fridge. Never leave homemade food in your pet's dish for more than 30 minutes. Throw away any remaining food the animal does not eat.

When it comes to making your own pet food, consider using organic ingredients found in health food stores intended for vegans and vegetarians to ensure there is no hidden ingredients that can harm your pet

Nice Kelly! We make a lot of our own pets food with chicken, brewers yeast, oatmeal and veggies. I am going to pass this on to my hubby to review because I am sure our dog would love something new.

This is great info! I wish more people would take the time to read the labels on their dog's food. My dog is on a wheat-free, soy-free, and pork-free diet; and his food is holistic. I even make him special homemade treats with sweet potatoes and free range, organic eggs. Some people might say it's spoiling a dog, but I think it's extending his life.

Kelly - I have a farmers market friend who sells homemade dog biscuits. It's amazing watching people line up every Saturday!
