How to Make Homemade Chap Stick

Zac Linzmeier
If you find yourself burning through expensive lip balm or chap stick on a regular basis then you may want to consider the do-it-yourself alternative to see the same results but save yourself a considerable amount of money. Chances are you will have the majority of what you need for making homemade chap stick around your house already!

Ingredients

1 Teaspoon of honey

1 Tablespoon of bee's wax

ΒΌ Teaspoon of vitamin E extract or oil

3 Tablespoons of petroleum jelly

(Optional) If you would like to add an extra flavor/scent beyond just honey consider doing so with a teaspoon of an ingredient such as lemon juice or vanilla extract

Since we will be melting down some of these ingredients in the microwave be sure to get a microwave appropriate bowl and combine your bee's wax and petroleum jelly until melted; usually 4-5 minutes in the microwave. You will want to stop it 2-3 times and stir your mixture to make sure it is melted and mixed in a consistent fashion.

After removing the bowl allow it time to cool to room temperature and then add your remaining ingredients. It is important to stir these all together thoroughly in order to obtain a nice and even mixture; the last thing that you want is for your new homemade chap stick to come out in globs on your lips.

It should be noted that this is a personal favorite mixture for scent and taste. The petroleum jelly and vitamin E extract are really the key ingredients which will be providing protection and relief for dry or chapped lips although I believe bee's wax has benefits in these areas as well. Feel free to substitute the honey for another flavoring ingredient or combine it with other ingredients to spice things up and suit your own personal preference.

Your final homemade chap stick product is fine to be stored at room temperature and should be good for around two months. Ideally you will have a small tin to put it in so you can carry your chap stick around and apply it as needed throughout your day.

Hopefully you can apply this simple recipe for homemade chap stick and save money while also having a chap stick personalized to your own taste. Never have to worry about chapped lips or the cost associated with preventing them again!
