How to Make a Christmas Tree Ornament with Popsicle Sticks (Preschool Craft Project)

If you are a parent of a preschooler, your child may enjoy preschool craft projects. With a homemade Christmas ornament, not only can you allow them to express their creativity, but you also get an ornament for your tree and cheap Christmas presents for family.

So, how can you and your preschooler make a homemade Christmas tree ornament with popsicle sticks?

Supplies Needed:

Popsicle Craft Sticks

Glue

Scissors

Yarn or Thread

Brown and Green Paint

Paint Brushes

Colored Construction Paper

Colored Beads or Rhinestones (Optional)

Directions:

1 - To get started, take about four popsicle crafts sticks, position them horizontally on the table.

2 - Start trimming the edges of the popsicle craft sticks. To create a Christmas tree shape, start with a full size craft stick at the bottom and trim the remaining three sticks into smaller sizes.

3 - Put one popsicle craft stick on the table and position pointing upwards. This is the base for your child's homemade Christmas tree ornament.

4 - Start gluing the popsicle sticks horizontally onto the stick base. If using more than four popsicle craft sticks, the tree branches will be closer together. Remember, the larger craft sticks start at the bottom.

5 - Paint the Christmas tree. For a traditional Christmas tree ornament, use green and brown paint. However, if you want your child to really express their creativity with this preschool craft project, let them get colorful.

6 - Add small colored beads or rhinestones to the Christmas tree ornament with glue. These will serve as decorations. If you do not have anything to use, cut up small pieces of construction paper. A hole puncher is a great way to create perfect, small shapes that resemble Christmas ornaments.

7 - Add a star at the top with glue. Craft stores sell packages of small cutout stars. You can also use yellow construction paper or chenille craft pipe cleaners to create a Christmas tree star.

8 - Take yarn and create a small loop and glue it to the back of the homemade Christmas tree ornament. For quick drying and permanent sticking, do this yourself with a glue gun.

9 - Have your child sign and date their preschool craft project. If your child cannot write their name, do it for them. This is the most important step in giving this homemade Christmas tree ornament as a gift or keeping it as a family memento.

By following the above mentioned steps, you now have a homemade Christmas tree ornament that you and your child created together. If this is a preschool craft project that your child enjoys, create more ornaments to give to family members as gifts.

In addition to traditional sized popsicle craft sticks, jumbo sticks are available for sale in most craft stores. In fact, colored sticks are available for sale as well. With colored craft sticks, follow the above mentioned directions, but eliminate painting.

Great ideas...When my kids were little we would start a month early and make all the decorations for the tree. As toddlers we started with construction paper cutting traced shapes with cookie cutters and each year get into something harder...play dough one year and so one. I love your idea of signing and dating the ornament. I did not think of that one...nice touch.

I just tried the Christmas Tree Ornament made of popsicle sticks. That is a GREAT project!! I thought it would be easy to cut the sticks with scissors, but I was Horribly mistaken. But if you can have to sticks preped, it is a really easy project for those kids who have a hard time sitting to do a project. There are several steps, but none of them are very long steps.
It turned our great. Oh yeah, I had the kid do the steps, but then i hot glued to sticks togther to be sure they stick together for a long time.
    Thanks for the idea.
