How to Make Homemade Churros

Sophia S. Mark
Churros, a popular Mexican and Spanish treat, have become commonplace in the States and once you have tried some it's not hard to figure out why. A churro is a strip of dough that has been fried and then coated with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Some churros are made with fruit filling or even chocolate in the center.

My favorite way to enjoy churros is served with Spanish hot chocolate. Spanish hot chocolate is very thick and perfect for dipping and churros make the perfect treat to dunk.

The following is a recipe for making your own homemade churros which is not at all difficult and will be ready to eat in thirty minutes.

What You Need

1 Cup Flour
1 Cup Milk
3 Eggs
3/4 Cups Sugar, an additional 2 tbsp sugar
1 Tsp Ground Cinnamon
1/2 stick unsalted butter
Canola Oil

What You Do

In a small saucepan heat the one cup of milk butter, butter and salt over low heat. Add the two tablespoons of sugar to the mixture once the butter has melted and stir, increase the heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Next, add the cup of flour to the saucepan while stirring continuously. When the mixture has reached dough like consistency, it should after about 30 seconds, remove it from the heat and let it cool for about five minutes. It is really important that you do not heat the dough for more than the 30 seconds because otherwise the dough will not puff properly.

Separately, beat each egg and add them one at a time to the mix. Make sure you mix the entire egg into the dough before you add the next egg. Fill a pastry bag with a large star tip up with the dough.

Before you begin frying the dough combine the 2 tbsps of sugar and the tsp of sugar on a plate and set it aside.

Fill a deep frying pan with about 4 inches of canola oil and heat till it reaches a temperature of 315-325 degrees. Carefully pipe out the pastry dough from the bag that are about 4 inches long. Add the dough strips to the oil and cook until they are a light brown color, should not take more than five minutes. Do not overcrowd the pan with churros otherwise they will not be crispy. Spoon out the churros and place them on a paper towel lined plate to drain off the excess oil. Don't let all the oil drain off completely. Roll the churros in the sugar and cinnamon making sure each one is evenly covered.

Now all thats left to do is enjoy!

umm.. ok. so in the last sentence of the whole recipe, you made a mistake. it says, "Before you begin frying the dough combine the 2 tbsps of sugar and the tsp of sugar on a plate and set it aside.", it sould say, "Before you begin frying the dough combine the 2 tbsps of sugar and the tsp of CINNAMON on a plate and set it aside. that is all!
