First, gather all of your old crayons and place on a clean work surface. You can sort the crayons by individual colors or you can mix them up some. Next, get a muffin pan out. Mini muffin pans work really well, but larger muffin pans will work fine also. Spray the muffin pans with a little bit of cooking spray. Use the cooking spray sparingly-it does not need very much. After the cups have been sprayed, place some of the bits and pieces into them. If you want to make multi-colored crayons, add bits and pieces of different colored crayons. For solid colors, use the same color in the cups. For smaller crayons, use fewer bits and pieces of old crayons. For larger crayons, place more pieces in the cups.
After all of the muffin cups have been filled with old crayon pieces, heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the muffin tin into the heated oven until the old crayons melt. When the old crayons have melted throughout, take them out of the oven and let them cool. Lay out a sheet of wax paper and place the new crayon chunks on the wax paper. Allow the crayon chunks to thoroughly cool before using them.
Once the crayon chunks have completely cooled, you can begin using them! They work just as they normally would and actually are easier for younger children to use them because they are chunkier than regular crayons. Don't throw your old crayons away anymore! Recylce them and make new ones for your kids to enjoy! Tell your friends and family how to recycle their old crayons!
Once your crayons begin getting small, store them in muffin tins according to their colors. When the tray is full, simply bake away! There is no need to sift through all of the old crayons if they are already in the tins waiting for you!
