How to Make a Homemade Donut Costume for Halloween

Lynn Mason
I have always preferred homemade Halloween costumes to store bought costumes. I think the creativity makes a costume much more enjoyable. Homemade costumes don't have to be expensive or elaborate; they should, however, be creative. My favorite creative costume idea came from a kidding session at work. My co-worker was complaining about the donuts in the staff lounge and her lack of ideas for a Halloween costume. "You could go as a donut," I teased her.

"No, you go as a donut!" she replied. What a great idea! I had never seen a donut costume before and I love original costume ideas.

When my husband and I had a shop in town, we always had a Halloween cookout at our business. We would decorate our corner, crank Halloween music, set up trailers, picnic tables and grill hot dogs. We gave away hot dogs, chips, pop, and candy. Our cookout quickly became a Halloween tradition around town.

The music was always a hit and I would dress up and dance and have a blast. We played songs with a Halloween theme such as Werewolves of London, Monster Mash, and Spooky Little Love. More than one costumed trick- or-treater refused to journey on with their parents because our party was so much fun! My costume had to be as much fun as our party.

I was always searching for good last minute ideas for a homemade costume. My donut made the biggest splash and didn't cost me a penny! I started with an old tire inner tube and deflated it half way.

I then painted the bottom half of the tube with a light yellowy- brown, acrylic craft paint. When the paint was dry I flipped the tube over and applied a heavy layer of pink paint for the icing. I painted the icing 'dripping' down the sides of the donut in an irregular line. I finished my donut with large size opalescent glitter (available at craft stores) for sugar sprinkles.

I completed my costume with a donut box hat. I simply went to a Casey's gas station and explained why I wanted a clean donut box and they gladly gave me one for free. I cut a head sized hole on the bottom of the box and positioned it on my head with a corner facing front.

It gets pretty cold here in Illinois by the end of October and we would be outside for hours serving up fun and hotdogs so warm costumes are necessary. I dressed warmly in jeans and a heavy coat, stepped into my donut, and shimmied it up over my middle. My husband topped of the inner tube with air to give it a nice rounded look and keep it from sliding off my hips. If you were using this idea for an indoor party you could dress in white to be a donut dunking in milk!

I received many laughs and compliments for my funny costume and had more than one kid ask, "Are you a ....donut?" This sweet costume was definitely one of my favorites. It was fun and cheap. What's not to love? Happy Haunting!
