How to Make Homemade Play Doh

JenniLee
There are many different types of homemade play dough "play doh" you can make easily in the comfort of your own home. One of the many is said to turn out like the store bought kind. The ingredients needed for this type of play doh is as follows:

Half a cup of salt

One cup of flour

One cup of water

One tablespoon of oil

One tablespoon of powdered alum

Two tablespoons of vanilla

Your choice of food coloring

The second step is to mix the salt, flour, and powdered alum all together in a bowl. After these dry ingredients are mixed well you add the oil as well as the water. Mix thoroughly then put in a pot and cook over medium heat on the stove top. Stir the mixture constantly until it reaches the consistency of mashed potatoes.

Remove the pot from heat and add in the vanilla and food coloring of your choice. Then mix and place into a bowl. The best way to get it finished at this point is to divide the play doh mixture into balls and work it with your hands by kneading the play doh. Also different colors may be added to different sections if wanted. In the end you should have fun play doh for you and your kids to play with!

The next type of play doh you can make at home is referred to as "Nature's Play Doh."

The ingredients needed for this mixture are as follows:

One cup of flour

One cup of water

Half a cup of salt

Two tablespoons of oil

Two tablespoons of cream of tartar

Some beet juice, spinach juice, and carrot juice

The next step is to mix the flour, salt, and oil in a large bowl then slowly stir in the water. Place in a pot and cook over medium heat on the stove top stirring it till the dough becomes thickened and stiff. Remove the dough and place in a bowl, kneading it with your hands to help it become more of the play doh we know. Then dividing it into balls and adding a few drops of the vegetable juices to each section will make them pink, orange, and green, then knead that in as well.

Whichever way you decide to make your play doh at home, make sure if children help or play with it they are always under adult supervision. All types of play doh are not recommended for children under the age of two. Have fun and enjoy your organic, fun creation!
