How to Make Homemade Scented Body Lotion

A Fun and Frugal Formula for Soft Skin

M. Hall
Trying to stick with the budget? Trying to find ways to stretch a dollar? Here is a simple, fun and frugal way to create your own body lotion. You can custom blend it to suit your needs. It is also a perfect gift idea for someone special.

Here is the Perfect Home Made Lotion Recipe:

Ingredients:
One 7.5 ounce jar of petroleum jelly-Use 1/2 of the jar
Two 8 ounce jars of Personal Care Brand Vitamin E Skin Cream
One 4 ounce jar of Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E Skin Care Cream
One 15 ounce bottle of baby lotion, fragrance of your choice
1/2 half cup of tap water

Using a large bowl, mix all ingredients together with an electric mixer until the consistency is "fluffy". Mixing the formula in this way gives it a wonderful silky texture. Once you have it custom blended to your liking, you will need to transfer it to a container, and store it in the fridge. I use a 39 ounce plastic coffee container that has been washed and dried well. I store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh and use smaller plastic containers for daily use. You can also get creative and use pretty glass bottles and jars if you have them.

Cost: The ingredients for this recipe will cost you between $6-12 and will make enough lotion to fill a 30-40 ounce container. I buy all my ingredients at the local Dollar General store and sometimes I am lucky enough to find what I need at the Dollar Tree, where everything is a dollar!

Custom Blend: The above ingredients are not set in stone. The fun part of making this recipe is that you can experiment with different amounts of lotion, cream or petroleum jelly until it feels just right to you. I personally use a generic brand of lavender and chamomile lotion instead of traditionally scented baby lotion. It is what we used for my son when he was a baby and the scent reminds me of him. Lavender and chamomile has also long been known for its relaxing and soothing qualities. You can buy essential oils of different scents at health food stores, specialty stores and online.

The Benefits: Consider this: You now have a cost effective way to make something nice for yourself and others. It would also be a fun activity to do with your daughters or your friends. The combined ingredients of mineral oil, aloe and Vitamin E along with coconut, wheat germ and sunflower oils is great for your skin. You are doing your part in helping the environment. You will be recycling plastic containers to keep them out of the landfills. The process of making the lotion takes 30 minutes or less, so there is not a huge time commitment.

Try this recipe and soon you will be passing it along to friends, coworkers and family members.

Can the ingredients be bought in large quantities?

I have found the whipped vaseline works better. Takes two tubes.

Sandy, Not in the little jars. We keep it in the little jars unrefrigerated about two months. The big container stays in the fridge, though. Thanks for your interest.

If you put in small jars, does it have to be kept refrigerated??? How long will it keep??
