How to Make a Homemade Slip N Slide

Monica Bullock
Having summer fun with a Slip N Slide is just part of summer life. Did you know you can save a little money and make your own impromptu slide? Besides saving a little cash, our Slip N Slide is wider and lots more fun! Here's how to make a homemade slip n slide in just a few easy steps.

Pick Your Spot

You need to pick a good spot. It should be away from buildings or anywhere you can slide into. Also clear the ground. The slide works best when it's laid on short soft grass cleared of rocks and stones. Remove limbs and there should not be any stumps either. If there are holes in the ground, even small ones, fill them with sand. You need a smooth surface to lay your tarp on.

Tarp It

Blue plastic tarps are so perfect for this fun activity. In just a couple of steps your tarp will transform into a Slip N Slide! Lay down the tarp putting the slickest side up. To make it really fun, put down two tarps. The first tarp should overlap a second to make a giant, long slide. Secure the corners of the slide with bangs of sand. Don't use concrete blocks. That's an accident waiting to happen.

Hose 'Em Down

Run some water over your tarp getting it totally wet. Leave the water hose running resting the end on the edge of the tarp. The water flow shouldn't be too slow or too fast. Just a medium water flow that keeps the tarp saturated.

Secret Ingredient

The secret ingredient to our homemade Slip N Slide is baby shampoo. You'll need a large bottle of the stuff to really the slide soapy and slippery. It should be the kind that is tear proof. Your local dollar store would be a great place to buy no tear, baby shampoo for just a buck or two. Dispense quite a bit of shampoo onto the tarp and wet it again. Every so often add some soap to the Slip N Slide for maximum slippage.

If sounds like fun, let me tell you it is. No matter how old you are. Have fun with your family and friends on your Slip N Slide.

Buy the Wahii WaterSlide and skip the baby shampoo. Kids love it! Sold on Ebay and Amazon.com.

Good idea with the baby oil and baby shampoo. I just tried it with plastic from the hardware store $15.00 (just as much as regular slip n slide but triple the size at least) and it wasn't working too good. I am thinking our grass was too long?

Another good idea to make sure you slide is to baby oil yourself, before slipping and sliding.
