How to Make Homemade Snow Cream

An Inexpensive Winter Time Treat

Steven W. Easley
When I was a kid growing up, one of my all time favorite things about winter was when my mom would make homemade snow cream. She only had one real rule about this inexpensive treat, she would only make any after the first snowfall of the season. She was a firm believer that the first snowfall helped to cleanse the atmosphere and therefore contained too many pollutants to make the dish. Living in Tennessee we're sometimes lucky to see one snowfall a year so I was always excited when we were blessed with a second one. One other thing she insisted on, but it wasn't so much of a rule was that the snow needed to be clean and fresh. She would have me or my dad gather fresh snow off the car with a plate. We'd scoop a thin layer off the car and fill the biggest bowl we had with the white flakes.

Items you'll need:

Large bowl of fresh snow
Vanilla extract
Egg
Sugar
Milk

Step 1 Gather fresh snow into a large bowl. As I've mentioned, it's best if you collect thin layers of snow with a plate off of an object rather then directly off the ground. One year we gathered snow off the kid's trampoline.

Step 2 Add one teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix the vanilla extract into the snow.

Step 3 Add one egg. Stir an egg into the snow and vanilla extract mix. The egg helps to keep the snow together.

Step 4 Add one cup of sugar. You may want to add more, but wait until you've finished making the snow cream to determine if you have enough already.

Step 5 Stir in enough milk for the mixture to become relatively thin.

Step 6 Taste test your mixture, you may need to add more milk or sugar to your snow cream to get the desired taste.

Step 6 Serve and enjoy.

Snow cream is a treat your entire family will love, but remember it's not exactly a prime example of health food. But it will add a sweet touch of favor to winter for you and your family and who knows maybe it will become a tradition in your home as well. Snow cream is delicious and more filling them you might expect so be careful you don't over stuff yourself. That can happen before you realize it and you'll end up with a tummy ache.
