How to Make Homemade Toothpaste

Zac Linzmeier
If you want to start cutting costs on household items then chances are you have all of the necessary ingredients already around your home to make homemade toothpaste. So long as you do not fancy a special toothpaste, such as one with added fluoride, this recipe is great for the do-it-yourself enthusiast.

Ingredients

Hydrogen Peroxide (use any solution found at your drug store, commonly 2-5%)

Baking Soda (brand doesn't matter, just a little is needed)

(Optional) Flavoring Oil. You can use anything from vanilla extract to peppermint or cinnamon oil here, whatever suits your tastes; just a drop or two is required.

The key ingredients here are hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. The hydrogen peroxide solution serves the function of killing bacteria in your mouth and is quite a bit more effective than standard toothpaste as it foams and coats your teeth. Baking soda also has properties that will kill bacteria but is primarily included for it's ability to scrub your teeth and be combined with hydrogen peroxide in order to make a paste.

You may make your homemade toothpaste in any quantity that you desire but the key is to use a ratio of five parts baking soda to slightly under two parts hydrogen peroxide; if desired just a small dash of your preferred flavoring agent needs to be added to add an enjoyable taste. If you want to keep it very healthy and natural then consider steeping mint leaves and making your own extract out of these, don't want to get pieces of mint leaf between your teeth, to flavor your toothpaste and leave you with an appealing fragrance on your breath.

Simply stir your ingredients together until they form a nice paste and you now have your own practically free and very effective homemade toothpaste.

I personally recommend that you make enough homemade toothpaste only for three to four days as it tends to lose its consistency after this time period, however since it only takes minutes to make this should not be too much trouble; storage at room temperature is just fine provided you do not use a food element as flavoring.

It should also be noted that both hydrogen peroxide and baking soda are potentially harmful if swallowed but just fine to be swished around in your mouth. Be sure not to ingest excessive amount of your toothpaste, rinse and spit when finished brushing.
