How to Homeschool for Free

Cindy Mae
It is possible to give your children a good quality homeschool education without a lot of money and without being a teacher. Homeschooling for free, or at least almost free, is very possible, and I believe any parent can do it. As long as you have a computer with Internet, you can homeschool your child. A printer is a plus, but it can be done without one.

I homeschool both of my children almost for free. The only money I have to put out is on printer paper and ink for the printer, which I purchase in large refill kits and only spend about $30 a year on. I purchase the cheapest printer paper I can when needed. Of course, we have the normal school supplies such as pencils, map colors and such, but that would be needed even if they were in public school.

My first suggestion to anyone who homeschools is to find a book or resource that tells you what your child should know at each grade level. This can serve as a fantastic guide and help you plan your curriculum. I personally use "Home Learning Year by Year" by Rebecca Rupp. This book is wonderful and lets you know exactly what your child should know and when. Of course, one of the many fantastic things about homeschooling is that you can move at your own pace and you can adjust your homeschool curriculum according to each child's level. My son came out of public school behind on several subjects, so we just went to the previous grade for those subjects.

Now that you know what your child needs to be working on, it's time to start looking for the right curriculum. You can find free homeschooling worksheets and lessons all over the Internet. Lesson plans often include complete instructions for how to present a certain subject to a child to help teach them, which means you don't have to be a teacher or have experience ... you will just learn with your child.

Google is one of the best resources for homeschooling for free in my opinion. Google search engine never fails me. It is important to know how to search for what you are looking for. Being specific in your search terms will help you find exactly what you are looking for and much quicker than using general terms.

For example, let's say we are teaching multiplication to a third-grade child. What terms would you use to find what you are looking for? If we search for "3rd grade math," a very general search, more than likely you won't come up with the search results you are looking for. Be more specific about what you need. For teaching multiplication, you would want to search for something like "third grade multiplication lesson." It is important to include the grade level when searching because this helps narrow down the search and it cuts down on time as well.

Another example we can use would be something for teaching an eighth-grader about the Scientific Method. When searching for that in Google, you would search for "8th grade Scientific Method lesson" or "Scientific method lesson for grade 8."

Is it time to teach your high school student how to write an essay? No problem. Just Google "how to write a high school essay," and I am sure you will find just what you are looking for.

Learning to search the most effective way will allow you to give your child or children a great education from the safety of home for free!
